Discovery Series Ornament – Kentucky
I can’t believe it has been more than a year since I added the Kentucky mug to the site. Time flies! It’s time to review the Discovery Series Kentucky Ornament.
Kentucky earned statehood in 1792 as the 15th state and the first west of the Appalachian Mountains, separating from Virginia to forge its own identity. The state’s name derives from a Native American word meaning “land of tomorrow” or “meadowland,” reflecting the fertile bluegrass region that attracted pioneers. As a border state during the Civil War, Kentucky remained officially in the Union while its citizens fought on both sides, creating lasting complexities. From bourbon distilleries and thoroughbred farms to coal mines and tobacco fields, Kentucky has cultivated a distinctive character blending Southern hospitality, Appalachian traditions, and agricultural prosperity that continues to define the Commonwealth today.
– Kentucky landscapes feature the rolling hills of the Bluegrass region with its iconic white-fenced horse farms, Appalachian mountains in the east, and fertile river valleys throughout the state. The pastoral scenery of manicured pastures, sprawling estates, and tree-lined country roads creates postcard-perfect views that embody Kentucky’s rural beauty. These landscapes represent the agricultural heritage and natural splendour that have shaped Kentucky’s identity and economy for centuries.
– Wild turkeys inhabit Kentucky’s forests and fields as the state’s official game bird, with conservation efforts successfully restoring populations after near-elimination in the early 1900s. Turkey hunting remains a cherished spring and fall tradition for outdoorsmen across the Commonwealth. Wild turkeys represent Kentucky’s successful wildlife management and the sporting heritage deeply embedded in rural culture.
– Mint juleps serve as Kentucky’s signature cocktail, combining bourbon, fresh mint, sugar, and crushed ice in silver cups – becoming the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. This refreshing libation has symbolized Southern hospitality and gracious living since the 1800s. The mint julep represents Kentucky’s bourbon heritage and the refined traditions of leisurely Southern entertaining on warm afternoons.
– The Kentucky Derby stands as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” and is represented in the mug’s design by the elegant hats worn by spectators at Churchill Downs since 1875. These elaborate millinery creations have become as famous as the race itself, with Derby Day transformed into a fashion spectacle alongside the sporting event. The decorated hat symbolizes Kentucky Derby pageantry, tradition, and the social celebration surrounding America’s most prestigious horse race.
– Kentucky Burgoo is a thick, hearty stew traditionally made with multiple meats and vegetables, slow-cooked in massive quantities for community gatherings, political rallies, and Derby parties. This communal dish reflects Kentucky’s frontier heritage when neighbours shared whatever ingredients were available in large pots. Burgoo represents Kentucky’s tradition of hospitality, community celebrations, and the rustic comfort food that brings people together across the Commonwealth.
