Discovery Series – Huế
The Starbucks Discovery Series Hue mug highlights one of Vietnam’s most historic cities. Huế served as the imperial capital of the Nguyễn Dynasty from 1802 to 1945, and much of its identity is still tied to royal architecture, court traditions, Buddhism, and life along the Perfume River. The city is also known for its refined cuisine, much of which developed under imperial influence. Today, Huế remains one of the country’s most distinctive cultural destinations, with the Complex of Huế Monuments recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Captured on the mug are several symbols and landmarks of Huế, reflecting the city’s imperial heritage, river scenery, and famous cuisine.
– Thiên Mụ Pagoda is one of the clearest landmarks on the front of the mug. Founded in 1601, it stands on a hill overlooking the Perfume River and is best known for its tall seven-story tower. It is one of the most recognizable sights in Huế and appears in countless photos, paintings, and travel guides about the city.
– The dragon recalls Huế’s strong imperial identity. Dragons were closely associated with the Nguyễn emperors and can be found throughout the decoration of palaces, gates, temples, and royal tombs. On this mug, the dragon fits naturally with Huế’s long history as Vietnam’s former royal capital.
– The Perfume River and the dragon boat are also featured in the design. The river runs through the heart of Huế and has shaped the city’s layout, atmosphere, and daily life for centuries. Dragon boats remain one of the classic sights on the river, especially around the city’s historic landmarks.
– Lotus flowers appear around the front of the mug and feel very fitting for Huế. Lotus ponds are closely tied to the city’s calm and elegant image, and the flower has long been associated with Buddhist culture, royal gardens, and traditional aesthetics in central Vietnam.
– The large gate on the mug appears to reference Ngọ Môn, the Noon Gate of the Imperial City. Built in 1833 under Emperor Minh Mạng, it served as the main ceremonial entrance to the inner royal enclosure. It remains one of the most important architectural symbols of Huế.
– The round tray filled with many small dishes looks like bánh bèo, one of Huế’s most famous local specialties. These delicate steamed rice cakes are usually served in small dishes and topped with shrimp, scallion oil, and crispy bits. Huế is especially well known for this style of bite-sized savory dishes.
– The bowl shown on the back of the mug looks like bún bò Huế, another dish strongly associated with the city. This rich noodle soup is known for its flavorful broth, round rice noodles, and combination of beef and herbs. It is one of the best-known dishes from central Vietnam.
– The woman in a conical hat brings in the familiar image of áo dài and traditional Huế elegance. Huế is often associated with graceful, formal versions of Vietnamese dress, and the city’s slower rhythm and imperial background give this imagery a very natural place in the design.
– The rowers on the left side suggest traditional boat racing on the river. Boat races have long been part of festival life in central Vietnam, and Huế’s riverside setting makes this a fitting detail to include among the city’s cultural images.
– The white heron adds a touch of local nature to the design. Birds like this are often associated with wetlands, rivers, and quiet waterside landscapes, which suit Huế and the surrounding central Vietnamese scenery very well.
– The bouquet of flowers can be connected to Nguyen Hue Flower Street, one of the best-known annual celebrations in Ho Chi Minh City during Tết. Each Lunar New Year, Nguyen Hue Street is transformed with large floral displays, decorative installations, and themed gardens that attract huge numbers of visitors. The tradition has become an important part of the city’s holiday celebrations, turning the central pedestrian boulevard into a colorful seasonal landmark.
