Discovery Series – Bolivia
The Discovery Series Bolivia mug introduces another South American country release with a design that moves from the Andes to the Amazon and combines traditional culture with some of Bolivia’s most famous landscapes and foods. The history of Bolivia stretches back to ancient Andean civilizations, including Tiwanaku, before the region became part of the Inca Empire and later Spanish colonial territory. Bolivia gained independence in 1825 and was named after Simón Bolívar. Today, the country is defined by the coexistence of indigenous traditions, colonial history, and an extraordinary variety of landscapes, ranging from the Andes and high-altitude salt flats to tropical lowlands.
– The llama, shown on the front of the mug, is Bolivia’s national animal and one of the country’s most recognizable symbols. These domesticated camelids have been part of Andean life for centuries, providing wool and transport and remaining an important part of rural communities. They are especially associated with the high-altitude landscapes of the Altiplano.
– The man in traditional costume on the front of the mug appears to be performing Caporales, one of Bolivia’s most energetic and visually distinctive dances. The male dancers, known as caporales, traditionally wear colorful costumes and decorated boots with bells, performing vigorous steps that emphasize their movements and rhythm. Created in the late 1960s and inspired by the historical caporal, or foreman, associated with the Afro-Bolivian community, the dance has become an important part of Bolivian folklore and festivals.
– The bunch of grapes refer to Bolivia’s growing wine industry, particularly in the southern Tarija region. Bolivian high-altitude vineyards are among the highest in the world, producing wines and the traditional grape spirit Singani. The country’s official tourism authorities even promote the region as the Ruta del Vino de Altura y del Singani, or the High-Altitude Wine and Singani Route.
– The mountains below the title represent the Cordillera, the mountain ranges that form one of Bolivia’s defining landscapes. The Andes cross much of the western part of the country, while ranges such as the Cordillera Real surround some of Bolivia’s most dramatic highland scenery. Snow-covered peaks, deep valleys, and the high Altiplano are all part of this distinctive geography.
– The large white landscape in the center of the design is the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat. Located in southwestern Bolivia, it covers more than 4,000 square miles (10,500 square kilometers). During the rainy season, a thin layer of water can transform its enormous surface into a giant natural mirror, creating one of Bolivia’s most famous and surreal landscapes.
– The crescent-shaped pastry on the design is a salteña, one of Bolivia’s most popular traditional foods. Similar in appearance to an empanada, it is filled with a rich, juicy stew that can include meat, potatoes, vegetables, and spices. The liquid filling is an important part of the experience, which means eating a salteña without spilling it requires a certain technique!
– The spotted jaguar (Panthera onca) on the back of the mug represents Bolivia’s tropical and subtropical wildlife. The species is the largest big cat in the Americas and lives in several Bolivian regions, including the Amazonian lowlands. It is also an important animal in indigenous traditions, where the jaguar has long been associated with strength and spiritual power. Bolivia’s official tourism information specifically lists the jaguar among the wildlife of the biodiverse Moxos region.
– Finally, the mountainous landscape and Andean vegetation continue across the back of the mug, tying the design together. This is a nice reminder of how geographically diverse Bolivia is: within one country, the Discovery Series design can move from llamas and salt flats to vineyards, tropical jaguars, and dramatic mountain ranges without feeling out of place.
