The mascot of Michigan State University is Sparty, a beloved figure who embodies the spirit and pride of the Spartan community. When John Hannah assumed the presidency of Michigan State College in 1941, he tasked Assistant Professor of Art Leonard D. Jungwirth with creating a statue depicting an athletic Spartan warrior. Jungwirth’s creation was initially intended to be cast in bronze, however, due to World War II’s bronze rationing, the statue had to be cast in terra cotta. For over six decades, the terra cotta Spartan graced the banks of the Red Cedar River until 2005 when the university replaced it with a bronze replica. The original Spartan was relocated to the stadium, where it continues to stand proudly on display.
Beaumont Tower, completed in 1928, is a 104-foot tall tower that marks the site of College Hall, which collapsed in 1918 due to poor construction. It was John W. Beaumont, a graduate of MSU, who advocated for the construction of the monument to preserve the Campus Circle and honor the significance of education.
