Been There – Norwegian Gem
Starbucks Been There Norwegian Gem is a mug for one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s most successful Jewel-class vessels. Built by Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, at a cost of approximately $700 million and launched in 2007, she was the last ship of her class to be constructed. During her construction, an innovative hull design was implemented that improved fuel efficiency by 5% compared to her sister ships. An interesting fact about her construction is that she was too large to pass through the River Ems normally, so the ship had to be conveyed backward over a distance of about 20 miles to reach the North Sea.
Here are some unique features and activities of the ship:
Bliss Ultra Lounge: A distinctive feature of the Gem, this venue transforms from a surreal art-themed lounge during the day into a high-energy nightclub, complete with bowling alleys – a rare feature at sea
Stardust Theater: A three-story theater designed to replicate the grandeur of classic European opera houses
Le Bistro: The ship’s signature French restaurant features hand-painted walls and impressionist-style artwork, creating an authentic Parisian atmosphere
Orchid Garden: Offers an exclusive Asian fusion menu not found on many other Norwegian ships
Tequila Latin Restaurant: A specialty dining venue unique to the Gem, featuring Latin American cuisine and tequila tastings
The Villa: An adults-only courtyard area with a private pool, hot tubs, and luxury cabanas
Four-Lane Bowling Alley: One of the few cruise ships in the world to offer full-size bowling at sea
Rock Climbing Wall: Features unique routes designed specifically for the Gem’s configuration
Yin & Yang Spa: Features thermal suites with specialized treatment rooms incorporating Norwegian design elements
Crystal Atrium: A signature space featuring a two-story waterfall and a glass elevator
The Haven: An exclusive suite complex with its own private courtyard and unique two-story villa suites
Behind the Scenes Art Tour: A curated walk through the ship’s extensive art collection, valued at over $5 million
Master Mixology Program: Exclusive cocktail-making classes featuring Norwegian heritage recipes
Bridge Viewing Room: One of the few cruise ships that allows guests to observe navigation operations through a specially designed viewing area
The back of the mug has a mention of Harvest Caye which is Norwegian Cruise Line’s exclusive 75-acre private island destination located off the southern coast of Belize. It offers Norwegian Gem passengers a unique paradise-like experience during their cruise. The island features a stunning 7-acre white sand beach with crystal clear waters, a massive 15,000-square-foot pool with a swim-up bar, and a series of luxury beach villas that can be rented for ultimate privacy and comfort.
