Been There Ornament – Perlis
The Been There Ornament Perlis is a mini version of the mug we reviewed earlier. I’m lucky to have this in my collection, thanks to a friend who travels frequently across Asia.
Perlis, the smallest state in Malaysia, may be compact in size, but it is rich in history and natural beauty. Located in the far north of Peninsular Malaysia, it shares a border with Thailand and has long served as a vital trading route between the two nations. Historically known as part of the ancient Kingdom of Kedah, Perlis became a separate state in the early 19th century and developed its own distinct cultural identity. Its peaceful countryside, limestone hills, and friendly people make it one of Malaysia’s most charming and laid-back destinations.
– One of the key landmarks shown on the mug is Padang Besar, a bustling border town famous for its lively open-air market. Here, locals and visitors alike shop for Thai and Malaysian goods, from food and clothes to handicrafts. The market embodies Perlis’s unique cross-border culture, where languages, cuisines, and traditions blend effortlessly.
– The mug also features Dataran MPK, a recognizable local square often used for community gatherings, celebrations, and cultural events. It represents the heart of Perlis’s civic life, where people come together for festivities and public performances. The design captures its welcoming atmosphere and its importance as a social hub in the state.
– The image of bicyclists represents one of Perlis’s most beloved activities — cycling through scenic rural landscapes. With quiet roads winding through rice fields and limestone hills, the state is ideal for leisurely rides. Many locals and tourists enjoy cycling to explore Perlis’s countryside at a relaxed pace, taking in its fresh air and tranquil beauty.
– Another recognizable feature is the mangosteen, known locally as the “queen of fruits.” This tropical delicacy grows abundantly in the region and is cherished for its sweet, tangy flavour. The mangosteen not only reflects the agricultural richness of Perlis but also symbolizes the freshness and simplicity of its local produce.
– In the background, you can spot the striking limestone hills and caves, a signature of Perlis’s landscape. These formations, particularly those in Wang Kelian and Gua Kelam, are popular spots for hiking and exploring. The natural scenery offers breathtaking views and reveals the state’s deep geological and ecological heritage.
