Discovery Series – Denver
Starbucks Discovery Series Denver is a mug for the “Mile High City”. Its history begins with its founding in 1858 during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, when prospectors established a mining camp at the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. The city was officially incorporated in 1861 and named after James W. Denver, the governor of Kansas Territory. Denver became the capital of Colorado when the state joined the Union in 1876, transforming from a rough frontier town into a thriving commercial hub. The arrival of the railroad in 1870 cemented Denver’s role as the economic and transportation center of the Rocky Mountain region, while the silver boom of the 1880s and later oil discoveries fueled decades of growth and prosperity.
– The outdoor activities depicted throughout the design celebrate Denver’s unparalleled access to Rocky Mountain recreation that defines the city’s lifestyle. World-class ski resorts lie just an hour west, offering some of North America’s best powder skiing and snowboarding from November through April. During warmer months, endless hiking trails wind through mountain forests and alpine meadows, with fourteeners (14,000-foot peaks) challenging ambitious climbers. Mountain biking enthusiasts tackle technical singletracks and scenic routes throughout the Front Range foothills. Whitewater rafting on the Arkansas, Colorado, and Clear Creek rivers provides adrenaline-pumping adventures through stunning canyon landscapes. This year-round playground makes Denver a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts who want urban amenities with wilderness at their doorstep.
– Denver Union Station, shown on the mug, is the city’s historic transportation hub and architectural centrepiece, originally opened in 1881. This Beaux-Arts masterpiece, with its distinctive “Travel by Train” sign, has been beautifully restored into a vibrant mixed-use destination featuring restaurants, bars, and a boutique hotel. Union Station remains a functioning transit center while serving as Denver’s living room, where locals and visitors gather beneath its soaring ceilings.
– Red Rocks Amphitheatre depicted on the design is one of the world’s most spectacular concert venues, carved naturally into massive red sandstone formations. This geological wonder, located just west of Denver, has hosted legendary performances since 1906, with perfect acoustics created by the towering 300-foot rocks. Red Rocks represents Denver’s unique combination of natural beauty and cultural sophistication, attracting music lovers and hikers alike.
– The Colorado State Capitol, illustrated on the mug, is Denver’s iconic government building crowned with a gleaming gold dome. Completed in 1894 and modelled after the U.S. Capitol, its 15th step marks exactly one mile above sea level, giving Denver its famous nickname. The building symbolizes Colorado’s history and democratic traditions while serving as a landmark visible throughout the city.
– Confluence Park, shown on the design, marks the historic spot where Denver was founded at the meeting of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. This urban park has been transformed into a recreational hub featuring kayaking courses, bike paths, and walking trails along restored riverbanks. Confluence Park represents Denver’s successful revitalization of its waterways and commitment to creating accessible green spaces in the urban core.
– The Denver Omelet depicted on the mug celebrates the city’s claim to this classic American breakfast dish filled with ham, onions, peppers, and cheese. While the true origin is debated, Denver’s association with this hearty omelet reflects the city’s Western heritage and cowboy culture. This simple yet satisfying dish remains a breakfast staple in diners throughout the Mile High City.
