Founded in 1867 in Washington, D.C., Howard University was established in the aftermath of the Civil War to provide educational opportunities for newly freed African Americans. Named after General Oliver Otis Howard, the institution quickly grew into one of the most influential historically Black colleges and universities in the United States.
