Starbucks isn’t wasting any time with the releases from new locations! Discovery Series – Iowa State University is the first mug from the Campus Collection under the new Discovery Series collection – and a surprise addition, since Iowa State was never featured in the Been There series. It’s exciting to see these arriving so quickly. I’m already spotting more mugs from this subseries, so stay tuned for what’s next.

Iowa State University, founded in 1858 in Ames, Iowa, is a public land-grant institution with deep roots in agricultural and mechanical education. It was the nation’s first land-grant university to be established under the Morrill Act, setting a model for public higher education across the U.S. Over the decades, it’s grown into a leading research university, known for innovation in science, engineering, and technology.

Some of the symbols and landmarks of Iowa State University that I was able to spot in the design of the mug:

The Campanile is one of the most recognizable structures on campus, built in 1898. It houses a carillon with 50 bells and plays music across campus, especially during events and traditions. “Campaniling” – kissing under the tower at midnight – is a beloved tradition for students.

– Located near the Memorial Union, Lake LaVerne is a peaceful campus spot, often home to the iconic swans Lancelot and Elaine. It’s a go-to place for a walk, reflection, or simply watching the geese and swans glide by. The lake adds to the picturesque feel of central campus.

– Iowa State’s campus is known not just for its architecture but also for its feathered residents — Canada geese. These birds are a common sight around the central campus, especially near Lake LaVerne. While students might joke about dodging them on the way to class, they’ve become an unofficial part of the university’s identity.

– Iowa State’s athletic teams are known as the Cyclones, a name dating back to the 1890s after a dominant football win led newspapers to say their opponents had been hit by a cyclone. The name stuck, and today it represents all 16 varsity teams across NCAA Division I sports. The Cyclones compete in the Big 12 Conference, with strong fan support and a proud athletic tradition.

Cy the Cardinal has been Iowa State University’s beloved mascot since 1954. Despite the school’s nickname being the Cyclones, a tornado isn’t exactly costume-friendly, so they chose a cardinal to match the school colors. Cy appears at games and campus events, rallying students and fans with high energy and school spirit.

Jack Trice Stadium, home to Cyclone football, opened in 1975 and holds over 60,000 fans. It’s named after Jack Trice, the university’s first Black athlete, whose legacy of courage and integrity is honored throughout the campus. The stadium is a symbol of both school pride and historical significance.

– Home to Cyclone basketball, wrestling, and other events, Hilton Coliseum has earned a reputation for “Hilton Magic”—the electrifying atmosphere created by fans. Opened in 1971, it’s hosted countless memorable moments in ISU sports history. It’s also a hub for concerts and campus gatherings.

– The “Yes, we will fight” chant is part of Iowa State University’s fight song, called ISU Fights. It’s a spirited, fast-paced chant often heard at athletic events, especially football and basketball games. The line “Yes, we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State” fires up the crowd and players alike, capturing the Cyclone pride and determination. It’s a key part of building the game-day atmosphere and uniting fans under one rallying
