Discovery Series – Manhattan is probably the most colorful among “Boroughs of NYC” mugs. There are five in total, but it’s safe to say that some people mistakenly equate Manhattan with all of New York City. This is likely because Manhattan is the most well-known borough, home to iconic landmarks like Times Square, Central Park, and Wall Street. For many, especially tourists or those less familiar with NYC, Manhattan embodies the city’s global image.

The history of Manhattan goes back to 1624, when Dutch settlers established a trading post on the island, calling it New Amsterdam. This settlement later fell under British control in 1664 and was renamed New York. Manhattan played a pivotal role in the American Revolution and grew rapidly in the 19th century with waves of immigration and industrialization.

– The front of the mug shows New York City’s pretzel carts, which are iconic symbols of the city’s vibrant street food culture. Found on bustling corners, they serve warm, salted pretzels, offering locals and tourists a quick, classic snack that embodies the flavor of NYC.

– Right above the cart we see New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, a historic landmark and one of the world’s most famous train stations. Opened in 1913, its stunning Beaux-Arts architecture, celestial ceiling, and iconic clock make it a cultural and architectural gem. Beyond transit, it serves as a bustling hub for dining, shopping, and events, capturing the timeless energy of NYC.

Pastrami on Rye is a quintessential New York City sandwich, featuring tender, smoky pastrami piled high on fresh rye bread with a smear of mustard. Popularized by iconic delis like Katz’s, it’s a must-try for both locals and visitors.

– The Empire State Building, an iconic Art Deco skyscraper, has been a symbol of New York City since its completion in 1931. Standing 1,454 feet tall, it offers breathtaking views from its observatories and represents the city’s ambition and resilience.

Broadway, the heart of New York City’s theater district, is synonymous with world-class performances and dazzling productions. With its historic theaters hosting everything from timeless classics to cutting-edge musicals, it draws millions of visitors annually. As a cultural epicenter, Broadway showcases the creativity and talent that define NYC’s artistic spirit.

Times Square, often called “The Crossroads of the World,” is a vibrant hub in the heart of Manhattan. Known for its dazzling digital billboards, bustling energy, and Broadway theaters, it’s a top tourist destination. Day or night, it embodies the nonstop excitement and iconic spirit of New York City.

– The arched entrance with the columns is probably the reference to the New York Public Library. One of the largest in the world, it offers a vast collection of books, research materials, and cultural programs. Its iconic main branch, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, is renowned for its grand architecture and the famous lion statues at its entrance.
