Discovery Series – Memphis
Discovery Series Memphis is a release for a city in Tennessee that was founded in 1819 and named after the ancient Egyptian capital on the Nile River, a reference chosen because of its location along the mighty Mississippi River. Just as its namesake thrived beside water, Memphis grew into a major river port and cultural crossroads in the American South. Over time, it became known for music, civil rights history, and a distinctive riverfront skyline. The mug design brings together these defining elements into a lively portrait of the city.
Highlighted throughout the design are several recognizable Memphis landmarks and cultural icons that reflect its river heritage and musical legacy.
– The Memphis Pyramid stands prominently along the downtown riverfront. Originally opened in 1991 as a sports and entertainment arena, the 321-foot structure was later transformed into a large retail and observation complex. Its glass exterior and bold geometric shape make it one of the most unusual buildings in the city.
– Skyline of Downtown Memphis features a mix of modern high-rises and historic structures overlooking the Mississippi River. The cluster of buildings reflects the city’s role as a commercial and transportation hub. River views frame much of the downtown landscape.
– MATA Trolley adds a historic touch to the city streets. The vintage-style streetcars operate along downtown routes, connecting key attractions and neighbourhoods. Their classic design echoes early 20th-century transit systems.
– The Hernando de Soto Bridge (M Bridge) spans the Mississippi River between Tennessee and Arkansas. Completed in 1973, the steel arch bridge is easily recognized by its distinctive “M” shape formed by the truss design. At night, LED lighting illuminates the structure, making it a striking part of the skyline.
– The Mississippi River is central to Memphiss identity and history. The river supported trade, transportation, and industry as the city developed. Riverboats, barges, and scenic overlooks remain part of daily life along the waterfront.
– The Peabody Ducks are a long-standing Memphis tradition. Each day, trained ducks march from their rooftop palace down to the fountain in The Peabody Hotel lobby. This ceremonial procession has delighted visitors since the 1930s.
– Memphis blues represents one of the city’s most influential cultural contributions. The blues sound developed in the Mississippi Delta and found a powerful voice in Memphis recording studios and clubs. Legendary musicians helped shape modern American music from this foundation.
– Beale Street is the heart of Memphiss live music scene. Lined with clubs, restaurants, and historic venues, the street has been a center of blues performance for more than a century. Neon lights and live bands define its energetic atmosphere.
– Memphis signature dishes are closely tied to the city’s barbecue tradition. Memphis-style barbecue is especially known for its slow-smoked pork ribs, served either dry-rubbed with spices or coated in tangy sauce. Pulled pork sandwiches topped with coleslaw are another local staple found in restaurants across the city.
