Discovery Series – Michigan

I’ve reviewed Michigan Ornament recently, and Discovery Series – Michigan is a full-size version. The matching symbols from these two are: the Petoskey Stone, cherries, Mackinac Bridge, Robin Redbreast, and Ford Model T. The following elements are specific to the mug only:

– The painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) is the official state reptile of Michigan, known for its distinctive, colorful markings. These turtles have smooth, dark shells adorned with red, orange, and yellow streaks along the edges. Painted turtles are commonly found in Michigan’s ponds, lakes, and marshes, basking on logs or rocks in the sun. – The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is the official state game mammal of Michigan, recognized by its characteristic white underside of the tail, which it raises as an alarm signal. This graceful and adaptable species thrives in Michigan’s diverse habitats, including forests, farmlands, and suburban areas. White-tailed deer are herbivores, feeding on a variety of vegetation such as leaves, fruits, and acorns, playing a crucial role in seed dispersal.

The Great Lakes have been essential for transportation, trade, and natural resources, shaping Michigan into a pivotal region in the United States.

– The Coney Dog is a beloved Michigan culinary icon, particularly in Detroit. It’s a hot dog typically made from beef or a beef and pork blend, nestled in a soft steamed bun. The key to its unique flavor lies in the toppings: a hearty, spiced meat chili, diced raw onions, and a generous squirt of yellow mustard.
There are two famous variants:
– Detroit-style Coney Dog: Characterized by a beef heart-based chili, this version has a richer and slightly grainy texture.
– Flint-style Coney Dog: Known for its drier, finely ground beef topping, providing a different texture and flavor profile.
These hot dogs are a staple in many Michigan diners and Coney Island restaurants, where they are often enjoyed alongside a side of fries and a soda.

– Pasties are a beloved culinary staple in Michigan, particularly in the Upper Peninsula, with a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Introduced by Cornish miners, these savory hand pies feature a robust pastry crust filled with a hearty mixture of diced meat (typically beef or pork), potatoes, onions, and sometimes rutabaga. The portable and nourishing nature of pasties made them an ideal meal for miners, and today, they remain a cherished local dish.
