Discovery Series Ornament – Pittsburgh
We’ve reviewed the full-size mug recently; the Discovery Series Ornament Pittsburgh is a mini version of said mug.
Pittsburgh, located in western Pennsylvania, is a city defined by its three rivers, steep hillsides, and strong community traditions. Once known primarily for steel production, it has grown into a center for education, healthcare, and technology while maintaining its distinct local character. The city’s bridges, stairways, and riverfront spaces shape everyday life. The mug design captures these elements in a lively and recognizable Pittsburgh setting.
Featured across the design are several symbols that reflect the city’s landscape, culture, and local favourites.
– Kayaking has become a popular way to experience Pittsburgh’s waterways. The Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers provide scenic urban paddling routes with skyline views. Kayakers are a common sight near Point State Park and along the North Shore during warmer months.
– City Steps are a distinctive part of Pittsburgh’s infrastructure. With more than 700 sets of public stairways, these steps connect neighbourhoods built along steep hills. Many of them function as pedestrian streets, complete with names and maintenance routes.
– The Pittsburgh Penguins represent the city in the National Hockey League. Founded in 1967, the team has won multiple Stanley Cup championships and plays at PPG Paints Arena. Hockey remains a major source of local pride and fan loyalty.
– Bingo has ties to Pittsburgh through Hugh J. Ward, who is credited with popularizing the modern version of the game in the early 20th century. Ward standardized the format and helped expand its reach beyond the city. The game later became a nationwide pastime and fundraising activity.
– Pierogies reflect the strong Eastern European heritage of many Pittsburgh neighbourhoods. These dumplings are typically filled with potatoes, cheese, or sauerkraut and are served boiled or fried. They remain a staple at festivals, sporting events, and family gatherings throughout the region.
