Discovery Series – University of Memphis
Here’s the new release from the Campus Collection. Discovery Series – University of Memphis is a mug for the University that was founded in 1912 as the West Tennessee State Normal School, dedicated to teacher education and service to the region. Over time, it evolved into Memphis State College and later Memphis State University, expanding its academic and research offerings. In 1994, it officially became the University of Memphis, symbolizing a modern vision for higher education in the Mid-South. The university’s colors, blue and gray, were chosen to represent unity between the North and South following the Civil War, and they remain a proud part of the Tiger identity.
These are the symbols and points of interest from the Discovery Series University of Memphis mug that I was able to identify:
– The university’s seal is made up of five key elements: the academic logo, the mace, a laurel wreath, the book of knowledge, and the university’s motto. The mace signifies leadership and authority and is used in formal ceremonies; it embodies academic tradition. The book of knowledge contains the Roman numerals “MCMXII,” marking the university’s founding year, and the motto Imaginari Cogitare Facere (“Dreamers Thinkers Doers”) encapsulates its institutional identity.
– The University of Memphis’s athletic teams are known as the Tigers. The live tiger “TOM” has long been a part of the school’s tradition, and although the most recent live tiger, TOM III, passed away in 2020, he remains a powerful symbol of school spirit. The Tiger nickname itself was officially adopted in 1939 after students popularized the chant “We fight like Tigers.”
– Tiger statues can be found throughout the University of Memphis campus, each uniquely designed and painted to represent different facets of Tiger pride. These statues serve as beloved photo spots for students, alumni, and visitors, reinforcing a sense of community and school spirit. They stand as artistic expressions of creativity, pride, and unity across campus life.
– Pouncer, the costumed mascot, embodies the fierce spirit and pride of the University of Memphis. Dressed in the school’s blue and gray colors, he rallies fans at games and events, encouraging the crowd with chants of “Go Tigers Go!” His presence symbolizes both school unity and athletic energy, serving as a living representation of the Tiger tradition that dates back to the 1930s.
– The school colors are Blue and Gray. These colors were chosen to symbolize unity and reconciliation between North and South following the Civil War. They are proudly displayed in the university’s branding, athletic uniforms, and merchandise as a lasting reflection of its heritage.
– The “Mighty Sound of the South” is the official marching and pep band of the University of Memphis. It performs at football and basketball games, as well as major university events, helping to rally school spirit and uphold university traditions. The band is closely associated with the fight song “Go! Tigers! Go!” and other game-day celebrations.
– The stadium depicted on the mug represents the Liberty Bowl, home to the Memphis Tigers football. Built in 1965, it has hosted countless exciting games, tailgates, and community events. Its open-air design and capacity for large crowds make it a central venue for both sports and regional pride, echoing the roar of “Go Tigers Go!” on game day.
– The Hunter Harrison Memorial Bridge is a landmark on campus that honors the late Hunter Harrison, a celebrated railroad executive and university supporter. The bridge symbolizes connection and progress, serving as both a literal and figurative link across the campus. It stands as a reminder of leadership, innovation, and the enduring impact of alumni and benefactors on the university’s growth.
– The JCPenney Suit-Up Event is a partnership between the University of Memphis Career Services and JCPenney to help students prepare for professional opportunities. During the event, students can purchase business attire at significant discounts while receiving career guidance and styling advice. This initiative emphasizes the university’s commitment to helping students transition confidently from the classroom to the workplace.
