Discovery Series – Yosemite
Discovery Series – Yosemite is the first National Park mug in the new collection. Since there aren’t many parks with Starbucks stores, Yosemite might remain the only mug of this kind.
Yosemite National Park was officially established on October 1, 1890, but its story starts earlier. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant, protecting Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias, marking the first time land was set aside by the federal government specifically for preservation. Influential figures like John Muir fought hard to expand protections, and their efforts helped shape the national park system we know today.
Some of the most popular spots in the park:
– Yosemite Valley is the centrepiece of the park. Carved by glaciers and surrounded by towering granite cliffs, it’s where many visitors spend most of their time. Iconic sights like El Capitan and Half Dome dominate the skyline.
– Half Dome is one of the most recognized features of Yosemite. Its sheer face and distinctive shape challenge climbers and hikers alike. A permit-only hike with cables helps brave souls reach the summit.
– El Capitan is a massive vertical rock formation that lures climbers from all over the world. It’s famous for “The Nose” route and the first free solo climb by Alex Honnold. Even from the valley floor, its size is staggering.
– Glacier Point offers one of the best panoramic views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and the High Sierra peaks. It’s accessible by car seasonally or by a challenging hike. Sunset and sunrise are particularly breathtaking here.
– Mariposa Grove is home to over 500 mature giant sequoias, some thousands of years old. Walking among these massive trees feels almost otherworldly. Grizzly Giant and the California Tunnel Tree are among the must-see specimens.
Yosemite’s most popular activities include:
– Hiking is one of the top activities in Yosemite. From short walks to multi-day backcountry treks, there’s a trail for everyone. Trails like Mist Trail to Vernal and Nevada Falls are some of the most popular.
– Rock climbing is world-famous here. Beginners can take classes, while experts come to tackle El Capitan and other granite giants. Yosemite is considered the birthplace of modern rock climbing.
– Photography is a major draw in Yosemite. Landscapes change dramatically with seasons and weather, offering endless inspiration. Iconic shots like Tunnel View and Valley View are popular with both amateurs and pros.
– Bears in Yosemite are a common sight, but they must be treated with caution and respect. Visitors are required to store food properly to prevent attracting bears. Keeping a safe distance and following park guidelines helps protect both people and wildlife.
