You Are Here – Al Madinah
After a short break, I am back to exploring unique Starbucks mugs from around the world! This time we’re looking at the design of the recently released You Are Here – Al Madinah. Also known as Medina, it is one of Islam’s holiest cities that holds deep historical significance as the place where Prophet Muhammad and his followers migrated in 622 CE, an event known as the Hijra, marking the beginning of the Islamic calendar. It became the first Islamic state and the site where many key revelations of the Quran were received, shaping the foundations of Islamic governance and community life. The city is home to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque, which was originally built by Muhammad himself and remains a central pilgrimage site for Muslims worldwide.
The front of the mug depicts Medina’s skyline. It is defined by the towering minarets and green dome of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque, which serves as the city’s spiritual and architectural centerpiece. Surrounding it are modern high-rise hotels and buildings that accommodate millions of pilgrims each year, blending contemporary structures with the city’s rich Islamic heritage. The illuminated mosque and its expansive courtyards create a breathtaking view at night, symbolizing the city’s timeless significance.
On the back of the mug, we can see Medina Haram Piazza Shading Umbrellas, a remarkable feature of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi’s courtyard. These massive, retractable umbrellas provide shade for worshippers, creating a comfortable space for prayer and reflection, especially in the intense desert heat. Inspired by Islamic architecture, their intricate geometric patterns and seamless automation blend tradition with modern engineering. When opened, they form a vast canopy, and when closed, they resemble elegant minarets, enhancing the beauty of the mosque’s surroundings.
