Starbucks Quietly Fixes Typo on Canadian Discovery Series Boxes
About a year ago, I wrote about a small but noticeable typo on the box of Starbucks’ first Canadian Discovery Series mug. It was the kind of thing most people would miss at a glance, but once you saw it, you couldn’t unsee it. More specifically, the grammatically correct French spelling for the word “Discovery” should be “Découverte”, and not “Decouvérte”. For collectors, details matter, and this one stood out.
At the time, there was no indication that Starbucks was aware of the issue, let alone that it was planning to correct it. The post was written partly to document the mistake and partly with the hope that it might eventually be fixed.
It turns out it was. As I was preparing new posts for the blog, I noticed that some of the mugs are now being offered with the typo fixed.
A Subtle Change, Easy to Miss
If you’re not comparing boxes side by side, you might never notice the update. The overall design of the Discovery Series packaging remains the same: dark green box, bold “Discovery Series / Série Découverte” text, and the same clean layout Starbucks has been using for this line.
But the original error is gone. This suggests a behind-the-scenes correction rather than a redesign.
What This Means for Collectors
For mug collectors, this creates an interesting split:
– Early boxes with the typo now represent a short-lived production error
– Later boxes reflect the corrected, “final” version
That makes the original typo boxes a bit more notable than they were when they were first released. They document a specific moment in the Discovery Series rollout, especially since this was the first Canadian mug in the series.
It’s a reminder that even with a company as large and detail-driven as Starbucks, small mistakes still slip through. And when they do, they often become part of the collecting story. This is exactly why documenting these things matters. And for those of us who pay attention to the boxes as much as the mugs inside them, that’s a satisfying conclusion to a very small but very real Starbucks mystery.
