Discovery Series Ornament – Atlantic City
I finally made it down to America’s Playground to pick up the Discovery Series Ornament – Atlantic City. It’s great to see this city finally getting its own mini mug after being overlooked for so long.
Atlantic City was founded in the 1850s as a seaside resort town, quickly gaining popularity for its beaches and fresh ocean air. By the late 19th century, it became a bustling getaway, with railroads bringing vacationers from Philadelphia and beyond. The iconic Boardwalk, built in 1870, was the first of its kind in the United States. In the 20th century, Atlantic City evolved into an entertainment hotspot, known for its nightlife, stage shows, and seaside charm. It saw periods of decline and rebirth, but its identity as a place of play and escape never faded. Today, the city stands as a symbol of East Coast resilience, nostalgia, and reinvention.
– Steel Pier has been a cornerstone of Atlantic City’s identity since it opened in 1898. Once known for hosting big-name performers like Frank Sinatra and The Beatles, it now blends historic flair with modern attractions. From towering rides to oceanfront views, it’s a living landmark that continues to thrill visitors.
– Speed-seekers can jump behind the wheel at one of Atlantic City’s go-kart tracks, offering family-friendly fun with a competitive edge. It’s a popular pick for visitors looking for more than sand and sea. Racing down the track with ocean breezes in the background is a memory-maker for all ages.
– The unmistakable chime of a slot machine is part of Atlantic City’s soundtrack. These bright, flashing machines line the floors of local resorts, offering quick hits of excitement. They’ve become a symbol of the city’s high-stakes allure.
– The submarine sandwich – also known as a hoagie – has strong roots in South Jersey, and Atlantic City claims a proud piece of that tradition. Loaded with meats, cheese, and crisp vegetables, it’s a local staple that’s both satisfying and authentic. Some say the unique Atlantic City bread, made with mineral-rich local water, gives it a flavor edge.
– Salt water taffy is the sweet that put Atlantic City on the confectionery map. Sold in colorful wrappers, it became a favorite souvenir for beachgoers since the late 1800s. Its chewy texture and playful packaging make it an enduring part of the city’s seaside charm.
