Discovery Series Ornament – New Hampshire
Similar to the design of the mini mug from the previous series, the Discovery Series Ornament – New Hampshire features blue colors, likely due to the blue background of the state’s flag.
New Hampshire was one of the original thirteen colonies and played a critical role in the founding of the United States. It was the first state to create its constitution independent of British rule in January 1776. The state also proudly cast the first vote for independence at the Continental Congress. Its motto, “Live Free or Die,” reflects the deep revolutionary roots that define New Hampshire’s identity. Industrial growth came quickly in the 19th century, especially with textile mills in cities like Manchester and Nashua. Today, New Hampshire remains a state that values independence, history, and natural beauty.
– The front of the ornament showcases Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the Northeast at 6,288 feet, which anchors the White Mountains range. It’s known for some of the most extreme weather ever recorded, including wind speeds over 230 mph. The White Mountains are a major draw for hikers, skiers, and photographers alike. They embody the rugged, untamed nature that defines much of New Hampshire’s landscape.
– Moose sightings are common in northern parts of the state, especially in the White Mountains and Great North Woods. These massive animals, sometimes weighing over 1,000 pounds, symbolize the wild spirit of the region. However, the official state animal is the White-tailed deer, a more widely seen and emblematic creature across the state. Together, they reflect the rich wildlife that calls New Hampshire home.
– The purple lilac, chosen as the official state flower in 1919, represents the enduring character and hardiness of New Hampshire’s citizens. It blooms in early spring, adding fragrance and color to yards and fields across the state. Unlike more delicate blooms, the lilac is tough, surviving harsh winters and thriving year after year. It’s a perfect fit for a state known for its strength and independence.
– The back of the ornament showcases colorful houses along Alton Bay, nestled on the edge of Lake Winnipesaukee. This scene captures the charm of New Hampshire’s lake life and the vibrant community that gathers around it. Alton Bay is a gateway to boating, fishing, and ice skating, depending on the season. It’s a quiet reminder of the peaceful beauty that exists alongside the state’s rugged terrain.
