A blog reader shared pictures of yet another release from India. Been There Pune has a minimalistic design and, as usual, features the symbols and landmarks of the city.

Pune’s history dates back over a millennium, although it gained prominence in the 17th century when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj established it as a key Maratha stronghold. The city became the seat of the Peshwa rulers in 1714, transforming into the de facto capital of the Maratha Empire. British colonial rule brought military cantonments and educational institutions that earned Pune the title “Oxford of the East.” The city played a significant role in India’s independence movement, producing freedom fighters and social reformers. Today, Pune balances its historical heritage as a cultural and educational center with its modern identity as an IT hub, while maintaining traditions that define Maharashtrian culture.

– Shaniwar Wada stands as Pune’s most iconic historical monument, a fortified palace built in 1732 as the Peshwa rulers’ seat of power. The massive teak gates, defensive bastions, and ruins of what was once a seven-story structure tell stories of Maratha glory. The fort remains Pune’s symbol and hosts evening light and sound shows recounting its dramatic history.

– Traditional Maharashtrian attire features women in distinctive nine-yard Nauvari saris draped in traditional style and men in kurta-pyjamas with the iconic Puneri pagdi (turban). The clothing reflects Pune’s preservation of Maharashtrian traditions despite modernization. Traditional dress appears prominently during festivals and cultural celebrations throughout the city.

– Sahyadri mountains form Pune’s western backdrop, part of the Western Ghats range, offering trekking destinations and historic hill forts within easy reach. These ancient hills host numerous Maratha-era forts, including Sinhagad and Rajgad, accessible for weekend adventures. The mountains define Pune’s geography and provide an escape from urban life.

– Traditional pottery represents Pune’s handicraft heritage, with terracotta vessels and decorative pottery produced using age-old techniques. Local artisans create both functional cookware and artistic pieces, continuing centuries of ceramic traditions. Pottery connects Pune to Maharashtra’s folk art and utilitarian crafts.

– Classical music instruments like the veena and tabla reflect Pune’s status as a major center for Indian classical music training and performance. The city has produced legendary musicians and hosts prestigious music festivals and gharanas (schools). Musical heritage remains integral to Pune’s cultural identity and educational institutions.

– Badminton originated in its modern form in Pune during the 1860s when British military officers stationed in the city developed the game, initially calling it
“Poona.” The sport evolved from traditional Indian games and was later introduced to England, where it was refined and renamed badminton. Pune’s role in creating this globally popular Olympic sport remains a point of pride and a fascinating contribution to world sports history.

– Maharashtrian cuisine dominates Pune’s food culture with specialties like misal pav, vada pav, puran poli, and bhakarwadi served at local eateries and homes. The food reflects both Brahmin vegetarian traditions and the robust flavours of rustic Maharashtrian cooking. Street food and traditional restaurants preserve authentic recipes passed through generations.

– Historic gates and architecture dot Pune’s old city areas, with entrances like Delhi Gate and stone structures from the Peshwa era preserved amid modern development. The blend of colonial-era buildings, Maratha-period structures, and traditional wadas creates Pune’s distinctive architectural character. These buildings anchor neighbourhoods and remind residents of the city’s layered history.
