Discovery Series – Los Cabos
The Starbucks Discovery Series Los Cabos highlights one of Mexico’s premier resort destinations, located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. The municipality of Los Cabos is made up primarily of the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, connected by a scenic coastal corridor lined with beaches, luxury resorts, and golf courses. While Cabo San Lucas is known for its vibrant marina and nightlife, San José del Cabo has preserved much of its colonial charm with historic streets and traditional architecture. The mug combines the region’s dramatic desert landscapes with the rich marine life that has made Los Cabos famous worldwide.
– El Arco de Cabo San Lucas dominates the left side of the design. Also known simply as The Arch, this massive granite rock formation marks the point where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Accessible only by boat, it has become the defining landmark of Los Cabos and one of the most photographed natural attractions in Mexico.
– San José del Cabo is represented by the colorful colonial buildings decorated with festive papel picado banners. Founded as a Spanish mission in 1730, the town remains the cultural heart of Los Cabos. Its historic center is filled with art galleries, boutique shops, cafés, and charming plazas that offer a quieter contrast to bustling Cabo San Lucas.
– Surfing takes center stage with the large breaking wave surrounding the surfer. Los Cabos offers excellent surfing throughout the year, with beaches such as Costa Azul, Zippers, and Monuments attracting everyone from beginners to experienced riders. Thanks to swells arriving from both the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, the region has become one of Mexico’s premier surfing destinations.
– Scuba diving and snorkeling are represented by the diver floating above the city name. The clear waters surrounding Los Cabos are home to colorful coral reefs, sea turtles, rays, and countless tropical fish. Jacques Cousteau famously referred to the nearby Sea of Cortez as “the world’s aquarium” because of its extraordinary marine biodiversity.
– Sport fishing is illustrated by the leaping marlin, one of the region’s most iconic game fish. Los Cabos is widely regarded as one of the world’s best destinations for deep-sea fishing, regularly hosting prestigious international tournaments that attract anglers from across the globe.
– Whale watching is represented by the humpback whale at the bottom of the mug. Every winter, humpback and gray whales migrate thousands of miles from the cold waters of Alaska to the warmer seas around Baja California, where they breed and give birth. Their annual arrival has become one of Los Cabos’ most spectacular natural attractions.
– Desert flora appears through the large orange flower and towering cactus beside the city name. Unlike many tropical beach destinations, Los Cabos sits where the Sonoran Desert meets the sea, creating a landscape filled with dramatic rock formations, giant cacti, and resilient native plants that thrive in the arid climate.
– Camels round out the design on the left side of the mug. Although not native to Mexico, camel rides along the beaches north of Cabo San Lucas have become one of the area’s most unusual and surprisingly popular tourist experiences. Against the backdrop of desert dunes and the Pacific coastline, they offer visitors a memorable way to experience the unique landscape of Los Cabos.
