You Are Here – Gdynia

I would like to thank a reader of the blog for providing the photos of this newly released You Are Here – Gdynia mug. Interestingly enough, Starbucks had already released a mug for Trójmiasto (Tricity), the metropolitan area primarily consisting of the cities of Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Sopot. To make things even more interesting, a dedicated mug for Gdańsk was released later as well. Does this mean a mug for Sopot is also in Starbucks’ plans? Why not?

Founded in the 1920s, Gdynia is one of Poland’s youngest major cities. After Poland regained independence following World War I, the country needed a modern seaport under its full control, and Gdynia was chosen for the task. Within just a few decades, it transformed from a small fishing village into one of the most important ports on the Baltic Sea. Today, the city is known for its maritime heritage, modernist architecture, and high quality of life.

– The most recognizable element on the mug is undoubtedly the Port of Gdynia. Cargo cranes, dock facilities, and ships dominate much of the design, reflecting the city’s identity as one of the largest and busiest ports in the Baltic region. The harbour has played a crucial role in Poland’s economy for over a century and remains the foundation upon which the city was built.

– The large body of water surrounding the port represents the Baltic Sea and the sheltered waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk. Gdynia’s location along the coast has shaped its history, economy, and culture. The city’s waterfront attracts both commercial shipping and recreational sailing, making the sea an inseparable part of daily life.

– The cluster of modern buildings on the right side of the mug highlights Gdynia’s reputation as a city of modern architecture. Unlike many Polish cities with medieval roots, much of Gdynia was developed during the interwar period. As a result, it became one of Europe’s finest examples of modernist urban planning, with numerous white facades, streamlined forms, and functional designs still preserved today.

– The forested landscape shown beside the skyline is a reminder that nature is never far away in Gdynia. The city is bordered by the Tricity Landscape Park, a large protected area filled with hills, forests, and hiking trails. These green spaces provide a striking contrast to the urban waterfront and are popular with both residents and visitors.

– Sailboats reflect Gdynia’s strong connection to sailing and maritime recreation. The city hosts numerous regattas and nautical events throughout the year and is home to one of Poland’s most important marinas. During the summer months, the waterfront comes alive with yachts, sailing schools, and maritime festivals.

– Kościuszko Square Fountain is another landmark that can be associated with the design. Located along one of Gdynia’s most important public spaces, the fountain serves as a popular gathering point on the route leading from the city center toward the waterfront. During the warmer months, its illuminated water displays attract both residents and visitors strolling along Kościuszko Square. Surrounded by cafés, shops, and views toward the harbor, the fountain reflects the lively atmosphere that makes this part of Gdynia one of the city’s most beloved destinations.

– Finally, the stylized waves wrapping around the mug tie the entire composition together. They serve as a reminder that Gdynia’s story has always been linked to the sea – from its origins as a fishing settlement to its rise as a modern port city and one of the jewels of Poland’s Baltic coast.
