Discovery Series – Osaka
The Starbucks Discovery Series Osaka mug leans into the city’s energetic personality with a mix of food, sports, wildlife, and familiar landmarks. Osaka has long been one of Japan’s great commercial centers, but it is just as famous for its casual food culture and lively street atmosphere. The orange interior also fits that cheerful image particularly well.
Here are some of the foods, landmarks, and activities featured in the design:
– Osaka Castle is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. The original castle was built in the late 16th century under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, while the present main tower is a later reconstruction. Surrounded by broad grounds and stone walls, it remains one of the clearest historical symbols of Osaka.
– Takoyaki is one of the foods most strongly associated with the city. These round batter snacks are cooked in special moulded pans and usually contain pieces of octopus, then topped with sauce, mayonnaise, bonito flakes, and other seasonings. It is a classic Osaka street food and one of the motifs Starbucks itself specifically identifies for this design.
– Kushikatsu is another local specialty featured on the mug. Meat, vegetables, and other ingredients are skewered, coated, and deep-fried until crisp, then commonly eaten with dipping sauce. The dish is especially connected with the Shinsekai area and fits naturally with Osaka’s reputation as a city where eating is part of the experience.
– The tall glass of mixed juice refers to another Osaka favorite. The drink is usually made by blending milk with fruits such as banana, orange, peach, and apple, producing a thick and sweet café-style beverage. It became popular in Osaka after the war and remains strongly associated with the city.
– The large whale shark points to Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, one of the city’s best-known attractions. Its enormous central tank is famous for housing whale sharks alongside rays, schools of fish, and other marine life. The spotted shark is such a recognizable part of the aquarium that it has become an easy visual shorthand for Kaiyukan.
– The Tree Avenue is one of Osaka’s most attractive seasonal streetscapes, especially when the trees turn golden in autumn. Long rows of mature trees create a striking corridor through the city, giving the area a much softer and more scenic feel than Osaka’s dense urban districts. The autumn colors make it especially popular for walking and photography.
– The tiger adds a sporting reference that immediately brings to mind the Hanshin Tigers, one of the region’s most passionately supported baseball teams. Baseball has a huge following in Osaka and the surrounding Kansai region, and Tigers fans are particularly famous for their enthusiasm.
– The athletes on the design add another side to Osaka’s sports culture. The city and wider prefecture host major baseball, football, rugby, and other sporting events, making competitive sports a familiar part of local life.
– The monkeys add a playful wildlife element to the artwork. Rather than dominating the design, they appear as one of several smaller details that give the mug the busy, humorous character often associated with Osaka.
