You Are Here Disney – Magic Kingdom Adventureland / Frontierland prototype

Thanks to my favorite seller, we have a chance to review some of the prototypes that were never released to stores. This You Are Here Magic Kingdom Adventureland / Frontierland (2016 prototype) is one of them. The design seems to focus mostly on Frontierland and Adventureland, combining attractions and imagery from both areas rather than covering the entire park evenly. This approach makes even more sense in hindsight, as Starbucks later released other Magic Kingdom designs with a stronger focus on Fantasyland and Tomorrowland

– Splash Mountain is one of the easiest attractions to recognize on the design, with its steep rocky peak and waterfall. At the time this prototype was created in 2016, Splash Mountain was still one of Magic Kingdom’s signature attractions in Frontierland. The log-flume ride originally opened in 1992 and remained at the park until 2023, when it closed to make way for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

– Big Thunder Mountain Railroad fits naturally alongside the Frontierland scenery. Opened at Magic Kingdom in 1980, the runaway mine-train coaster sends riders through a fictional mining town filled with red rock formations, tunnels, and abandoned mining equipment. Its rugged Western landscape is one of the most recognizable sights in this part of the park.

– Jungle Cruise appears as the familiar riverboat with a canopy. The Adventureland attraction has been part of Magic Kingdom since the park opened in 1971, taking guests on a humorous boat expedition through elaborately themed rivers and jungle environments inspired by different parts of the world.

– Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room comes to mind immediately from the colourful parrot perched above the landscape. The attraction is built around singing tropical birds, flowers, and tiki figures, combining music and Audio-Animatronics in one of Adventureland’s classic shows. The surrounding tropical plants and carved tiki elements reinforce that part of the design.

– Pirates of the Caribbean is referenced by the large skull-and-crossbones medallion. Magic Kingdom’s version of the attraction opened in 1973 and takes guests through pirate caves, forts, and Caribbean towns aboard small boats. The skull motif has long been one of the most recognizable visual elements associated with the attraction.

– The various tiki figures and tropical vegetation continue the Adventureland theme across the mug. Carved faces, palms, flowers, and lush greenery are all characteristic of the land’s deliberately exotic, old-school tropical atmosphere. Together with the Jungle Cruise boat and parrot, they make Adventureland almost as important to the design as Frontierland.
