Florianópolis, the capital of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, has a rich and unique history. Originally inhabited by the Carijó people, the area later attracted Portuguese settlers in the 16th century. The city was officially founded in 1726 under the name Desterro and became a key port and colonial settlement. In 1894, the name was changed to Florianópolis in honor of Marshal Floriano Peixoto, the second president of Brazil.

– Palácio Cruz e Sousa – Located in the heart of downtown, this pink palace is a symbol of the city’s imperial past. It was once the seat of the state government and now houses the Historical Museum of Santa Catarina. – Mercado Público de Florianópolis – This bustling public market is a cultural and culinary landmark. Built in the late 19th century, it features colonial-style arches and yellow-painted façades. Inside, you’ll find everything from fresh seafood and local produce to crafts and traditional foods. The market is a lively gathering place where locals and tourists enjoy music, conversation, and authentic island cuisine.

– Old Custom House (Alfândega) – Situated next to the public market, the Old Custom House reflects the city’s maritime heritage. It was originally built to control goods entering and leaving the island during the 19th century. The structure now serves as a cultural center and artisan marketplace. Its white walls and preserved colonial architecture make it a favorite stop for history enthusiasts.

– Hercílio Luz Bridge – An iconic symbol of Florianópolis, the Hercílio Luz Bridge connects the island to the mainland. Completed in 1926, it was once the longest suspension bridge in Brazil and a major engineering feat. Although closed to regular traffic for many years, it has been restored and reopened for pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge offers stunning views and is beautifully illuminated at night, making it a postcard-perfect landmark.
