Been There – Siem Reap
Been There Siem Reap is a mug for one of Cambodia’s most visited destinations, best known as the gateway to the ancient temples of Angkor. Over the years, the city has grown from a quiet provincial town into a major cultural and tourism center while still maintaining strong ties to traditional Khmer heritage. The Starbucks mug design highlights many of the landmarks, street scenes, and cultural elements associated with Siem Reap, blending famous temple architecture with local markets, riverside scenery, and everyday life. The overall artwork feels historical, warm, and deeply connected to Cambodian culture.
Shown throughout the design are several landmarks and symbols closely associated with Siem Reap and the surrounding Angkor region.
– Angkor Wat appears as one of the central architectural landmarks in the design. Built in the 12th century during the Khmer Empire, Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and Cambodia’s most recognizable national symbol. Its iconic towers and symmetrical layout have become instantly associated with the country itself.
– Bayon Temple is represented through the temple towers featuring carved stone faces. Located in Angkor Thom, Bayon is famous for its massive smiling faces carved into the temple’s towers, creating one of the most recognizable images in Cambodian archaeology.
– Terrace rice fields appear in the landscape portions of the artwork. Agriculture remains an important part of Cambodian life, and rice farming continues to shape much of the countryside surrounding Siem Reap.
– Pub Street is prominently featured on the side of the mug. This lively area has become the heart of Siem Reap’s nightlife and tourism scene, filled with restaurants, cafés, markets, and bars popular with visitors from around the world.
– Floating villages and river life are shown through the wooden houses and boats. Communities around Tonlé Sap Lake are known for homes built on stilts or floating platforms that adapt to seasonal water levels.
– Palm sugar and local produce are represented through the hanging bundles and market-style imagery. Palm products are widely used in Cambodian cuisine and traditional sweets, while local markets remain central to everyday life in Siem Reap.
– Traditional Khmer architecture appears through the ornate rooflines and decorative temple-inspired structures shown across the mug. These architectural details reflect centuries of Khmer artistic and religious influence.
– Cycling tours are illustrated near the bottom right side of the design. Exploring the Angkor temple complex by bicycle has become one of the most popular activities for visitors, offering a slower and more scenic way to experience the ancient ruins and surrounding countryside.
