Been There – Guangzhou
Much like most of the Chinese mugs from this series, Starbucks Been There – Guangzhou is an older release that I had no chance to review just yet.
Guangzhou is one of the oldest cities in the country. Its origins date back over 2,200 years to the Qin Dynasty, when it was established as a trading port. It became a crucial hub during the Tang and Song Dynasties, connecting China to the Maritime Silk Road and facilitating cultural and commercial exchanges with Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. Throughout the centuries, Guangzhou has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the influx of foreign merchants, and the transformative events of modern China, shaping it into the vibrant metropolis it is today.
It seems that the design of the Been There Guangzhou mug is focused on the local cuisine and natural landmarks. Here’s what I think those are:
– A Pearl River Cruise is an unforgettable way to experience the beauty of Guangzhou. As the third longest river in China, the Pearl River flows through the heart of the city, offering spectacular views of its skyline. The evening cruises are particularly popular, as they provide a mesmerizing view of the illuminated landmarks, including the Canton Tower and various bridges. The gentle breeze and shimmering reflections on the water create a romantic and enchanting atmosphere, making it a must-do activity for visitors.
– Yuexiu Park is the largest park in downtown Guangzhou and a green oasis amidst the urban landscape. The park is famous for its beautiful gardens, serene lakes, and historical monuments. One of its most notable features is the Five Rams Sculpture, which symbolizes the city’s mythical origins and prosperity. The park also houses the ancient Zhenhai Tower, now a museum exhibiting Guangzhou’s history, and the Sun Yat-sen Monument, dedicated to the founding father of modern China. Yuexiu Park is a perfect spot for leisurely walks, picnics, and immersing oneself in the city’s cultural heritage.
– No visit to Guangzhou is complete without indulging in its world-renowned cuisine. Dim sum is a quintessential part of the local food culture, with an array of bite-sized delights like har gow (shrimp dumplings), siu mai (pork dumplings), and char siu bao (barbecued pork buns) that are traditionally enjoyed with tea. Another local favorite is the white cut chicken, a simple yet flavorful dish where the chicken is poached and served with a ginger and scallion dipping sauce. For a sweet treat, try the double-skin milk, a creamy dessert made from milk and egg whites, known for its silky texture and delicate sweetness.
Viewing Guangzhou from above provides a stunning perspective of the city’s mix of modern skyscrapers, historical buildings, and natural landscapes. Here are a few ways to see Guangzhou from above:
– Baiyun Mountain, also known as White Cloud Mountain, is one of Guangzhou’s most beloved natural landmarks. Standing at 1400ft high, it offers a serene escape from the urban hustle and bustle. The mountain is dotted with scenic spots, including the picturesque Moxing Ridge, which provides panoramic views of the city. Visitors can hike up the well-maintained trails, enjoy the lush greenery, and explore the ancient Nengren Temple nestled within the mountain. Baiyun Mountain is a perfect spot for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility.
– The Canton Tower, standing at 2000ft, is not only a symbol of Guangzhou’s modernity but also offers one of the best views in the city. The observation deck provides a 360-degree panoramic view of Guangzhou’s sprawling cityscape. On clear days, you can see as far as Baiyun Mountain. The tower also features a thrilling sky-drop ride for adrenaline seekers and a revolving restaurant where you can savor exquisite meals while enjoying the breathtaking view.
