Starbucks Discovery Series – Chicago mug compliments the ornament that I reviewed earlier. I’ve already gone over these symbols and landmarks from the ornament: Chicago-style hot dog, the Chicago “L”, Chicago Botanic Garden, and Chicago’s musical heritage. In this post, we will take a look at the remaining elements of the design:

– The popcorn on the front of the mug is probably a reference to Garrett Popcorn Shops, which has been a staple since 1949. Garrett’s Chicago Mix, a delicious blend of caramel and cheese popcorn, has become a local and tourist favorite, embodying the city’s unique take on a classic snack. The aroma of freshly popped kernels often fills the air at various events and festivals, making popcorn a cherished symbol of Chicago’s culinary landscape.

– Baseball holds a special place in the heart of Chicagoans, with the city being home to two major league teams: the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox. Wrigley Field, the historic home of the Cubs, is an iconic venue known for its ivy-covered outfield walls and classic marquee. The passionate fanbase and rich baseball traditions are integral to the city’s identity, with both teams’ games drawing crowds from all over. Whether you’re a North Sider or South Sider, the spirit of baseball unites the community, making it a quintessential part of Chicago life.

Navy Pier is Chicago’s premier amusement park and entertainment destination, attracting millions of visitors each year. Opened in 1916, it offers a wide range of attractions, including the Centennial Wheel, a giant Ferris wheel providing stunning views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline. Navy Pier also hosts various events, exhibitions, and performances, making it a vibrant hub of activity. Its blend of fun and culture makes it a beloved landmark, embodying the lively spirit of Chicago.

– The city’s engineering prowess is showcased by its durable bridges, with the DuSable Bridge on Michigan Avenue being a prime example. This double-deck bascule bridge, completed in 1920, spans the Chicago River and connects the city’s north and south sides. Its architectural beauty and historical significance make it a notable landmark, often featured in photographs and films. The bridge’s ability to lift for river traffic is a testament to Chicago’s innovative spirit and commitment to functional yet elegant infrastructure.

Michigan Avenue, particularly the Magnificent Mile section, is a symbol of Chicago’s economic and cultural vitality. This iconic street is lined with high-end shops, historic buildings, and renowned institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago. The Michigan Avenue street sign itself has become an emblem of the city’s bustling urban life and commercial success. Walking down this avenue offers a glimpse into the dynamic and diverse character of Chicago, from its architectural marvels to its thriving retail scene.

Chicago-style pizza is a culinary icon, known for its deep-dish crust, generous layers of cheese, and rich tomato sauce. Invented in the 1940s by Pizzeria Uno, this hearty dish has become synonymous with the city. Locals and tourists alike flock to famous pizzerias like Lou Malnati’s and Giordano’s to indulge in this decadent meal. The pizza’s robust flavor and unique preparation method highlight Chicago’s innovative approach to food, solidifying its status as a must-try experience in the Windy City.
