Discovery Series – Idaho
I am still waiting to get my Gem State ornament, but for now, let’s review the design of the Discovery Series Idaho mug.
Idaho is a state defined by rugged landscapes, winding rivers, and a strong sense of outdoor independence. Admitted to the Union in 1890, it has long balanced agriculture, mining, and recreation across its mountains and high desert terrain. From dramatic waterfalls to fertile farmland, Idaho offers more variety than many expect. The mug design brings these natural and cultural elements together in one cohesive scene.
Featured throughout the design are several iconic Idaho symbols and landmarks that reflect the state’s character and natural beauty.
– Shoshone Falls Park dominates the front of the mug with its powerful cascade along the Snake River. Often called the “Niagara of the West,” Shoshone Falls stands approximately 212 feet high, even taller than Niagara Falls. The falls are located near Twin Falls and are especially dramatic during spring runoff. The image captures one of Idaho’s most breathtaking natural attractions.
– Mountain Bluebird is Idaho’s state bird and is known for its vivid sky-blue feathers. Commonly found in open fields and meadows, it is a welcome sight in spring and summer. The bird thrives in Idaho’s wide open spaces and nest boxes placed along rural roads.
– Syringa is the state flower of Idaho. This delicate white blossom grows on shrubs throughout the region and blooms in late spring. Despite its name, it is not related to the common lilac often called syringa.
– Cutthroat Trout represents Idaho’s rich fishing heritage. Named for the distinctive red slash under its jaw, this native trout inhabits cold mountain streams and lakes. Anglers from around the country visit Idaho for its fly fishing opportunities.
– River surfing highlights a surprising and growing activity in Idaho. Boise River Park has become a popular inland surf destination, drawing surfers to its adjustable wave feature. Unlike ocean surfing, river surfing takes place on stationary waves created by flowing water.
– Huckleberry is recognized as the state fruit and grows wild in Idaho’s mountain regions. These small, dark berries are used in pies, jams, candies, and syrups. Huckleberry season is highly anticipated each summer.
– Potatoes are perhaps Idaho’s most famous agricultural product. The state’s volcanic soil and favourable climate create ideal growing conditions. Idaho potatoes are exported nationwide and are central to the state’s farming identity. Their inclusion is an unmistakable nod to local agriculture.
– Peregrine Falcon is Idaho’s state raptor and one of the fastest birds in the world. It can reach diving speeds of over 200 miles per hour when hunting. These falcons nest on cliffs and tall structures throughout the state.
– Star Garnet is the state gem of Idaho and is especially rare. Idaho and India are the only two places in the world where this unique garnet is found in significant quantities. When polished, it displays a four- or six-ray star pattern.
– Kuna Caves are lava tubes located in southwestern Idaho. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, the caves stretch underground for more than a mile. Visitors can explore parts of the cave system with proper lighting and caution. The caves reflect Idaho’s volcanic past and rugged terrain.
