Discovery Series – Maryland

Discovery Series Maryland is a release for the state located along the Mid-Atlantic coast of the United States, which is defined by its waterways, colonial heritage, and maritime traditions. From the shores of the Chesapeake Bay to the historic streets of Annapolis and Baltimore, the state blends nautical culture with deep-rooted history. Its identity is closely tied to fishing communities, state symbols, and distinctive local flavours. The mug design brings together these recognizable elements in a composition that reflects Maryland’s character.

Featured across the design are several symbols and landmarks that highlight the state’s heritage, sports traditions, and coastal landscape.

– Black-Eyed Susan (State Flower) blooms brightly across Maryland fields and gardens during the summer months. Its golden-yellow petals and dark center make it one of the most recognizable wildflowers in the region. The flower is also famously associated with the Preakness Stakes horse race held in Baltimore.

– Lacrosse holds a special place in Maryland culture. The sport has deep roots in Native American history and remains extremely popular at both high school and collegiate levels across the state. Maryland teams have long been competitive on the national stage.

– Chesapeake Bay Bridge spans the vast waters of the Chesapeake Bay, connecting the eastern and western shores of the state. The twin-span bridge is an engineering landmark and a familiar sight for travellers heading toward the Atlantic beaches. Its sweeping structure stretches dramatically over open water.

– Skipjack (State Boat) represents Maryland’s working maritime heritage. These traditional wooden sailboats were historically used for oyster dredging in the Chesapeake Bay. Several preserved skipjacks still operate today, maintaining a connection to the state’s watermen traditions.

– Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly (State Insect) is known for its striking pattern of orange, black, and white markings. Once common in Maryland meadows, the species has become more limited in range due to habitat changes. It remains an important conservation symbol within the state.

– Blue Crab (State Crustacean) is central to Maryland’s culinary identity. Harvested from the Chesapeake Bay, blue crabs are commonly steamed and seasoned with Old Bay, forming a signature regional dish. Crab feasts are a longstanding social tradition during warmer months.

– Baltimore Oriole (State Bird) is easily recognized by its vivid orange and black plumage. The bird nests throughout Maryland in spring and summer, particularly near open woodlands and waterways. Its name also inspired the nickname of Baltimore’s Major League Baseball team.

– Maryland State House stands in Annapolis as the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use. Completed in 1779, it features the largest wooden dome constructed without nails in the United States. The building played a role in early American history, including the ratification of the Treaty of Paris.

– Smith Island Cake (State Dessert) is a multi-layered confection made of thin cake layers separated by rich frosting. Originating from Smith Island in the Chesapeake Bay, the dessert became Maryland’s official state cake in 2008. Its distinctive stacked appearance makes it instantly recognizable.
