Discovery Series Ornament – West Virginia
Similar to the previous series, the Discovery Series Ornament West Virginia is somewhat harder to find due to the smaller number of stores in the state.
West Virginia became a state in 1863 during the Civil War, separating from Virginia and establishing its own identity in the Appalachian region. The state is defined by rugged mountains, tight-knit communities, and long-standing cultural traditions. Its landscape has shaped both daily life and artistic expression for generations. The mug design reflects this connection between scenery, heritage, and music.
Please note that the West Virginia mug from this series features many more state symbols and landmarks. I especially liked the inclusion of the signature dishes of West Virginia in the design. As for the ornament, these are the elements picked by the designers:
– The Appalachian Mountains form the backbone of the state’s landscape. Rolling ridges, forested slopes, and winding valleys stretch across nearly the entire region. These mountains have influenced settlement patterns, industry, and the independent spirit often associated with West Virginia.
– The woman in the rocking chair reflects a familiar Appalachian scene. Seated on a porch with the mountains stretching out behind her, she appears to be holding a cup of coffee and simply taking in the view. The image captures a quiet, unhurried moment that speaks to porch culture and the deep connection between everyday life and the surrounding landscape in West Virginia.
– The banjo represents the music of West Virginia. Traditional Appalachian music, including bluegrass and old-time folk, remains a defining part of the state’s identity. String instruments like the banjo have echoed through mountain gatherings, front porches, and local festivals for generations.
– Northern Cardinal, the state bird, adds a bright splash of red against the mountainous backdrop. Recognized for its distinctive crest and clear whistle, the cardinal is commonly seen year-round across the state. Its presence reinforces West Virginia’s close ties to nature.
– New River Gorge highlights one of the state’s most dramatic natural landmarks. Known for its deep canyon, whitewater rafting, and the iconic steel arch bridge, the gorge has become a symbol of outdoor adventure. It showcases the rugged terrain that continues to define West Virginia’s landscape.
