You Are Here – Caserta
Here is one of the recent releases from Italy (yes, there are more coming!). You Are Here – Caserta is dedicated to a charming town located in the Campania region, just 15 miles from Naples. Despite being relatively unknown to many, Caserta offers a wealth of natural beauty, ancient structures, and a vibrant local culture that make it a worthwhile destination for visitors.
Caserta’s history dates back to ancient times when it was inhabited by the Samnites, an ancient Italic people. The city gained prominence during the Roman Empire and later became part of the Duchy of Terra di Lavoro. In the 18th century, under the Bourbon monarchy, Charles VII of Naples (later known as Charles III of Spain) decided to build a grand palace in Caserta, which would become one of the most remarkable architectural achievements of the time.
The crown jewel of Caserta is undoubtedly the Royal Palace, or “Reggia di Caserta”. Constructed in the mid-18th century, this opulent palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and often referred to as the “Versailles of Italy.” Designed by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli, the palace is a monumental example of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. The sheer size of the palace and its extensive gardens make it a must-visit attraction. The Royal Palace was the Bourbon kings’ residence and played a significant role in the political and cultural life of the Kingdom of Naples.
Other points of interest include:
– Royal Palace Gardens: The palace is surrounded by expansive gardens featuring fountains, sculptures, and perfectly manicured lawns. The English Garden and the Italian Garden are two distinct sections, each offering a unique landscape and atmosphere.
– The Court Theatre, nestled within the Reggia di Caserta, is a captivating testament to the artistic ambitions of the Bourbon monarchy. Constructed in the mid-18th century by architect Luigi Vanvitelli, the theatre boasts a richly adorned, horseshoe-shaped auditorium that once hosted courtly performances. With its intimate setting and regal decor, the Court Theatre provides a glimpse into the cultural vibrancy of the Bourbon court during the 18th century.
– San Leucio is a village located 2 miles north of Caserta. It was founded by Ferdinand IV, king of Naples, in 1789 and is known for its large silk factories. The village played a role in the industrial development of the region and is now home to the Complex of San Leucio, which includes a silk museum and a theater
– Vanvitelli Aqueduct: This impressive aqueduct, also known as the Caroline Aqueduct, was built to supply water to the Royal Palace and its gardens. It stands as a testament to the engineering prowess of the time.
To add more:
– Royal Fleur-de-lis: The Bourbon dynasty’s emblem, the fleur-de-lis, can be seen throughout the Royal Palace and its surroundings, representing the royal authority and influence.
Hi, is there an actual Starbucks in Caserta, I’ve not heard of this place before. I was in Naples last September and there were ongoing works to open a Starbucks in Galleria centre but it was very delayed and not sure if it’s opened yet. I assumed it would have a Naples mug when it did.
