You Are Here – Oktoberfest 2
Just in time for Oktoberfest 2023, Starbucks is releasing the new version of the previously seen mug. You Are Here Oktoberfest v2 is drastically different from the 2019 version, be that the color scheme or the elements of the design.
The Oktoberfest, known as the largest beer festival in the world, is a lively and vibrant celebration that takes place in Munich, Germany. Every year, millions of people from around the globe gather to indulge in the spirit of Bavarian culture, traditional music, mouthwatering cuisine, and of course, copious amounts of beer. Let’s dive into the rich history and exciting festivities of this iconic event.
The Oktoberfest traces its roots back to 1810 when Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The royal couple invited the citizens of Munich to join their wedding festivities, which were held in fields just outside the city gates. The fields were later named Theresienwiese, in honor of the princess. The inaugural celebration concluded with a horse race, which became a recurring event in subsequent years.
Oktoberfest encapsulates the essence of Bavarian tradition, offering visitors an authentic experience of the region’s culture, music, dance, and cuisine. Traditional clothing such as lederhosen for men and dirndls for women are proudly worn by both locals and tourists, adding to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere. Traditional folk music and dance performances infuse the air with energy, as attendees join in the cheerful spirit of the occasion. The dirndls is proudly displayed on the front of the mug.
One of the main highlights of the Oktoberfest is the beer tents. These massive structures, each with its own unique theme and atmosphere, are set up by Munich’s renowned breweries. The festival adheres to the German Beer Purity Law of 1516, Reinheitsgebot, ensuring that only beer brewed within Munich city limits and adhering to specific quality standards can be served. The tapping of the first beer barrel by the Mayor of Munich signals the official commencement of the festival. Visitors can immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere, enjoy live music, and sample a wide variety of traditional Bavarian beers. The festival is famous for its “Mass,” a one-liter beer mug that patrons raise in traditional toasts, fostering a sense of camaraderie and cheer. We can see the said beer mug on the front of this new release.
No Oktoberfest experience is complete without indulging in the delectable Bavarian cuisine. Visitors can savor mouthwatering delicacies such as pretzels, sausages, roast chicken, sauerkraut, and the iconic pork knuckle. These hearty dishes perfectly complement the flavorful beers, leaving attendees with an unforgettable culinary experience. For some reason, designers of the mug removed the sausage from the mug (can be seen on v1). We can still see the pretzel though.
Beyond the beer and food, the Oktoberfest offers a wide range of entertainment and activities. Traditional Bavarian music fills the air, courtesy of live bands playing lively tunes that get everyone dancing and singing along. Visitors can also enjoy amusement park rides, including Ferris wheels, roller coasters, and carousels, adding an element of excitement to the festivities.
