You Are Here – Seoul
Here is the You Are Here Seoul mug. Wait, what? How is this possible?
If you’ve been following the You Are Here series, you probably know that Starbucks never officially released any mugs for South Korea as part of the YAH collection. Instead, South Korea received its own beautiful series called the Korea Real City collection, featuring both full-size mugs and mini demis.
Well, that is still true because the mug you are seeing here was never officially sold in stores. This is actually a sample – a prototype that Starbucks appears to have developed during the planning stages of the You Are Here collection. For reasons that remain unknown, the design never moved into full production and was never released to the public.
What makes this piece so fascinating is its rarity. Having resurfaced recently from a private collection, this prototype may be the only known example in existence. For dedicated Starbucks collectors, it represents a remarkable glimpse into an unreleased chapter of the You Are Here series and could easily become the centrepiece of a world-class collection.
The good news is that this extraordinary piece of Starbucks memorabilia is now available for sale. Click here to open an eBay listing. That means one fortunate collector has the opportunity to own a mug that was never meant to reach store shelves – a genuine prototype from one of Starbucks’ most beloved collectible series.
Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a city where centuries-old history stands alongside cutting-edge technology and modern urban life. With a history stretching back more than 2,000 years, Seoul has grown into one of Asia’s most influential cultural, economic, and transportation centers. The Starbucks mug design reflects this blend of tradition and modernity through a collection of landmarks, cultural symbols, and everyday elements that define the city. From royal palaces and historic neighbourhoods to skyscrapers and world-class infrastructure, the artwork captures many sides of Seoul’s identity.
Featured throughout the design are several landmarks and symbols closely associated with the city.
– Geunjeongmun Gate at Gyeongbokgung Palace appears on the front of the mug and serves as one of the design’s most recognizable landmarks. Geunjeongmun is the main inner gate leading to Geunjeongjeon Hall, the throne hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace, which was originally constructed in 1395 during the Joseon Dynasty. The gate forms part of the grand ceremonial route used by kings, officials, and foreign envoys. Today, it remains one of Seoul’s most visited historical sites and a powerful reminder of Korea’s royal heritage.
– Namsan is represented through the mountain scenery on the mug. Rising in the heart of Seoul, Namsan provides a natural escape from the busy city below and offers panoramic views of the surrounding districts. Its walking trails and parks make it one of the city’s most popular recreational areas.
– N Seoul Tower stands atop Namsan and is one of Seoul’s most recognizable landmarks. Originally built as a communications tower, it has become a major tourist attraction known for its observation decks, nighttime views, and the thousands of “love locks” attached by visiting couples.
– Bukchon Hanok Village is represented through the traditional Korean architecture shown on the mug. Located between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace, the neighbourhood preserves hundreds of hanok houses dating back to the Joseon period. Its narrow streets and historic buildings provide a striking contrast to Seoul’s modern skyline.
– Incheon International Airport is reflected through the plane shown on the mug. Opened in 2001, the airport has consistently ranked among the world’s leading international airports and serves as one of Asia’s most important transportation hubs, connecting Seoul with destinations across the globe.
– Golf culture is represented through the flagstick featured in the design. South Korea has developed one of the strongest golf cultures in the world, with the sport enjoying immense popularity among both professionals and amateurs. Seoul serves as the center of this industry, with numerous golf facilities, simulators, and major tournaments drawing enthusiasts year-round.
– Gyeran-bap highlights a beloved Korean comfort food. The simple dish combines rice, egg, butter, soy sauce, and seasonings into a quick and satisfying meal. While humble in appearance, Gyeran-bap remains a favourite breakfast and late-night snack enjoyed by generations of Koreans.
