The reason for this nickname is the discovery of gold in 1848 which had a dramatic effect on California’s economy, allowing it to grow rapidly from ex-Mexican territory, to becoming a free state of US in 1950. A big portion of the front of Starbucks Been There Ornament Missouri mug is occupied by train. My guess this is related to Missouri Pacific Railroad, which was one of the first railroads in the United States west of the Mississippi River. Also:

I think Starbucks Been There Ornament Idaho is one of the prettiest so far. The mug has lots of blue elements, same color as the string. From the front of the mug:
– Spud State – my understanding this is one of the old nicknames. The most recent one is the Gem State.
– Hells Canyon on the border of Oregon and Idaho is only 10 miles long, yet it is North America’s deepest river gorge at 7,993 feet
