Discovery Series – Pittsburgh
Starbucks is back in the City of Bridges with the release of the Discovery Series Pittsburgh mug.
Pittsburgh, located in western Pennsylvania, is a city shaped by rivers, steel heritage, and dramatic hillsides. Once known as the Steel City, it has evolved into a center for education, technology, and sports while maintaining strong local traditions. The city sits at the confluence of three rivers, creating a distinctive skyline and geography. The mug design brings together these landmarks, flavours, and cultural references into one recognizable Pittsburgh scene.
Appearing across the design are several iconic Pittsburgh symbols and landmarks that reflect the city’s history, character, and signature dishes.
– Downtown Pittsburgh, known as the Golden Triangle forms the heart of the city. This area is bordered by the Allegheny River, the Monongahela River, and the Ohio River. Its pointed shape gives it the nickname Golden Triangle, and it features a dense cluster of skyscrapers and historic buildings.
– Point State Park with the fountain marks the exact point where the three rivers meet. The large fountain at the tip of the park sends water up to 150 feet into the air. The park also sits on the historic site of Fort Pitt and Fort Duquesne.
– Saint Anthony Chapel is home to one of the largest collections of Christian relics outside of the Vatican. Located in the Troy Hill neighbourhood, the chapel dates back to 1883. Its ornate interior and religious artifacts make it a unique historic site in the city.
– The Monongahela Incline Funicular Railway, more commonly known as an incline, has operated since 1870. The cable car climbs Mount Washington and offers sweeping views of Downtown Pittsburgh and the rivers below. It remains both a functioning commuter route and a popular visitor attraction.
– Fall foliage transforms Pittsburgh and the surrounding hills each autumn. Trees across the region turn vivid shades of red, orange, and gold. The colourful backdrop enhances views from overlooks and riverfront parks.
– The iconic 35-foot, 3,000-pound Heinz Field ketchup bottle is a playful tribute to one of the city’s most famous brands. The oversized ketchup bottle was once poured onto the scoreboard at Heinz Field after a Steelers score. Heinz ketchup itself has been closely associated with Pittsburgh since the company was founded there in 1869.
– Hugh J. Ward and the creation of bingo connected Pittsburgh to a widely recognized game. Ward is credited with popularizing and formalizing bingo in the early 20th century while working in the city. The game later spread nationwide as a form of entertainment and fundraising.
– The Pittsburgh Penguins represent the city in the National Hockey League. Established in 1967, the team has won multiple Stanley Cup championships. The Penguins are a central part of the city’s strong sports culture.
Three Pittsburgh’s signature dishes to try:
– The Primanti Bros. sandwich is a Pittsburgh original. The sandwich famously includes grilled meat, coleslaw, and French fries all stacked between thick slices of Italian bread. It was created in the 1930s to serve truck drivers in the Strip District.
– Pierogies reflect the Eastern European heritage of many Pittsburgh communities. These filled dumplings are commonly stuffed with potatoes, cheese, or sauerkraut. They remain a staple at festivals, family gatherings, and sporting events.
– Pittsburgh salad offers a local twist on a classic dish. Unlike traditional salads, this version is topped with crispy French fries and often grilled steak or chicken. It is commonly found on restaurant menus throughout the region.
