No other U.S. state, except California, has been represented by as many ornaments in this series, with an impressive seven releases to date. The Discovery Series Ornament Big Island is the sixth Hawaiian mini-mug in my collection, further showcasing the remarkable diversity and appeal of this iconic destination.

The Big Island of Hawaii, officially known as the island of Hawaiʻi, is the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago and one of the most geologically active places on Earth. Home to towering volcanoes, lush rainforests, waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and world-class marine life, the island offers a completely different atmosphere from the more urban parts of Hawaii.

– Rainbow Falls is one of the island’s best-known waterfalls and a highlight of the Hilo area. Cascading about 80 feet (24 meters) over a lava cave into the Wailuku River, the falls are famous for the rainbows that often appear in the morning mist when sunlight hits the spray. Surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, it is one of the Big Island’s most photographed natural attractions.

– Pueo, the Hawaiian short-eared owl, is an important symbol in Hawaiian culture and appears as part of the island’s wildlife imagery. Unlike many owls, pueo are active during the day and can often be seen gliding low over open fields and lava landscapes. In Hawaiian tradition, they are considered aumākua, or spiritual guardian animals, for some families.

– Punaluʻu Beach is represented through the island’s volcanic coastline and dark shoreline imagery. Famous for its striking black sand created by cooled lava fragments, the beach is one of the most recognizable coastal spots on the Big Island. It is also known for frequent sightings of Hawaiian green sea turtles resting on the sand.

– Scuba diving reflects one of the island’s greatest attractions: its underwater world. The Big Island is known for exceptionally clear water, lava-formed reefs, sea caves, and abundant marine life, including turtles, dolphins, tropical fish, and reef sharks. Dive sites along the Kona coast are especially popular because of the calm, clear conditions on the island’s western side.

– Manta ray night dive is one of the Big Island’s most famous experiences and a highlight of Kona’s marine tourism. Divers and snorkelers gather after sunset near illuminated sites where giant manta rays glide gracefully through the water to feed on plankton attracted by the lights. This nighttime encounter is widely considered one of the best marine wildlife experiences in the world and has become an iconic activity associated specifically with the Big Island.
