The Starbucks Discovery Series Kauai celebrates Hawaii’s oldest major island, often called the “Garden Isle” because of its lush landscapes, dramatic cliffs, and abundant rainfall. Formed millions of years ago by volcanic activity, Kauai has developed a unique character that sets it apart from the other Hawaiian Islands. Its rugged terrain, rich wildlife, and slower pace of life make it a favorite destination for travellers seeking natural beauty. The mug brings together many of the symbols that define this tropical paradise.
– Mount Waialeale, the mountain rising behind the city name, is one of Kauai’s most famous natural landmarks. Known as one of the wettest places on Earth, it receives an extraordinary amount of rainfall each year, feeding countless streams and waterfalls throughout the island. The mountain’s emerald-green slopes have helped earn Kauai its reputation as the Garden Isle.
– The Hawaiian monk seal, positioned near the center of the mug, represents one of the world’s most endangered marine mammals. Kauai’s beaches provide important resting and breeding habitats for these rare seals, which are found only in the Hawaiian Islands. Spotting one resting on the sand is a memorable experience for many visitors.

– Saimin, represented by the bowl of noodles at the top of the mug, is one of Hawaii’s most beloved comfort foods. Influenced by the islands’ diverse immigrant communities, this noodle soup combines elements of several culinary traditions. It remains a local favorite and an essential dish for visitors wanting to experience authentic Hawaiian cuisine.
– Sailing and ocean recreation are represented by the colorful sailboats on the left side of the design. Kauai’s coastline offers excellent opportunities for sailing, snorkeling, whale watching, and exploring secluded beaches that can only be reached from the water. The island’s relationship with the ocean remains central to everyday life.
– The Nēnē, Hawaii’s state bird, stands proudly on the left side of the mug. Once close to extinction, the Hawaiian goose has made a remarkable recovery through conservation efforts. Today, it can be found in several protected areas across Kauai and remains one of the islands’ most treasured native species.
– Helicopter tours, symbolized by the aircraft near the handle, offer one of the most spectacular ways to experience Kauai. Much of the island’s interior is inaccessible by road, making aerial sightseeing a popular activity. From above, visitors can admire hidden waterfalls, dramatic sea cliffs, deep valleys, and the rugged landscapes that have made Kauai famous around the world.
