Discovery Series – Puerto Vallarta
The Starbucks Discovery Series Puerto Vallarta mug presents a colorful look at one of Mexico’s best-known Pacific destinations. Puerto Vallarta began as a small coastal community and gradually developed into an important port before tourism transformed it during the 20th century. Today, the city is known for its beaches, marine life, tropical vegetation, colorful neighborhoods, and relaxed atmosphere around Banderas Bay. The artwork leans heavily into that coastal identity while also adding several references to local food, wildlife, and culture.
Here are some of the foods, activities, animals, and traditions featured in the design:
– The large humpback whale is an especially fitting symbol for Puerto Vallarta. Every winter, humpback whales migrate into Banderas Bay to breed and give birth, making whale watching one of the area’s most popular seasonal activities. Their dramatic breaches and tail displays are among the most memorable wildlife experiences available along this part of Mexico’s Pacific coast.
– The seahorse adds another reference to the rich marine life of Banderas Bay. Seahorses inhabit shallow coastal environments and reefs, where their unusual upright posture and curled tails make them instantly recognizable. Their delicate appearance contrasts nicely with the much larger whale shown nearby.
– The colorful orchids reflect the lush tropical vegetation surrounding Puerto Vallarta. Several orchid species grow naturally in western Mexico, particularly in humid forests and mountain environments. Their bright colors fit especially well with the city’s gardens, tropical climate, and the dense vegetation of the Sierra Madre rising behind the coast.
– The iguana is another familiar sight around Puerto Vallarta. Iguanas can often be seen sunning themselves on rocks, walls, and tree branches, particularly in warmer neighborhoods and garden areas. Their presence is so common that they have become an easy wildlife association with the city.
– The coconut connects naturally with Puerto Vallarta’s coastal environment. Coconut palms are common along beaches and resort areas, while fresh coconut is used in drinks, desserts, and beach snacks. The bright tropical fruit imagery fits the warm Pacific setting of the mug.
– Sailing is a popular way to explore Banderas Bay, whether on small sailboats, catamarans, or private yachts. The broad bay provides relatively sheltered water while still opening directly onto the Pacific, making it a natural place for sunset cruises, snorkeling trips, and longer excursions along the coast.
– The hammock reinforces the relaxed beach atmosphere associated with Puerto Vallarta. Hammocks are common around beachfront hotels, patios, and shaded areas, providing a simple visual shorthand for slowing down and enjoying the warm coastal climate.
– The colorful houses recall the traditional architecture of Puerto Vallarta’s older neighborhoods. Whitewashed walls, brightly painted facades, tiled roofs, balconies, and steep cobblestone streets are especially characteristic of areas around the historic center and Romantic Zone. The city’s older architecture remains an important contrast to the larger resorts that developed farther along the coast.
– Playa del Amor, also known as the Hidden Beach, is a striking natural attraction on the Marietas Islands, a protected group of islands off the Pacific coast near Puerto Vallarta. Enclosed within a crater-like opening and accessible through a narrow water passage, it has become one of the most recognizable sights in the region. Its unusual appearance and growing popularity have made it a fitting addition to the mug’s design, especially as the Marietas Islands are closely associated with beach excursions and marine life around Puerto Vallarta.
