Discovery Series – Guatemala
The Starbucks Discovery Series Guatemala is a mug for a country where ancient Maya history, volcanic landscapes, colorful traditions, and rich biodiversity come together. Located in the heart of Central America, it is known for its archaeological treasures, vibrant indigenous culture, dramatic mountain scenery, and distinctive artistic heritage. The design captures many of these defining elements through a collection of landmarks, wildlife, traditional crafts, and cultural symbols that reflect Guatemala’s unique identity.
Featured throughout the design are several landmarks and symbols closely associated with Guatemala.
– Tikal takes center stage through the large stepped Maya pyramid shown on the mug. Hidden within the tropical forests of northern Guatemala, Tikal was one of the most powerful cities of the ancient Maya civilization. Today, its towering temples rise above the jungle canopy and rank among the most important archaeological sites in the Americas.
– Traditional Guatemalan textiles appear through the colorful woven patterns and fabrics stretching across the design. Guatemala is famous for its handwoven textiles, many of which feature intricate geometric designs, bright colors, and symbols passed down through generations. Each region often has its own distinctive patterns and clothing styles.
– Kite festivals are represented by the large circular kites floating above the landscape. Every year on All Saints’ Day, giant handmade kites are flown in towns such as Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez. The tradition blends indigenous and Catholic customs and has become one of Guatemala’s most visually spectacular cultural celebrations.
– The ceiba tree appears near the left side of the mug. Known as Guatemala’s national tree, the ceiba held great significance in Maya cosmology, where it was believed to connect the heavens, earth, and underworld. Its massive trunk and wide canopy make it one of the country’s most recognizable native trees.
– Volcanoes form part of the scenery throughout the design. Guatemala is home to more than thirty volcanoes, including several active ones. Their dramatic silhouettes dominate the landscape and have shaped the country’s geography, agriculture, and history for centuries.
– Quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird, soars above the country’s name on the mug. Revered by the ancient Maya, the resplendent quetzal is known for its brilliant green plumage and long tail feathers. The bird is such an important national symbol that both Guatemala’s currency and national flag reference it.
– Chicken buses appear along the lower portion of the design. These brightly decorated buses, often converted from retired North American school buses, are a familiar sight throughout Guatemala. Covered in vibrant paint, chrome details, and personalized decorations, they have become one of the country’s most recognizable cultural icons.
– Santa Catalina Arch is featured near the front of the mug. Located in the historic city of Antigua Guatemala, the bright yellow arch is one of the country’s most photographed landmarks. Originally built in the 17th century, it allowed nuns to cross between buildings without entering public streets.
– Coffee cultivation is reflected through the agricultural imagery included in the design. Guatemala produces some of the world’s most highly regarded coffee, thanks to its volcanic soils, high elevations, and ideal climate. Coffee farming remains an important part of the country’s economy and cultural heritage.
– Traditional hiking and outdoor exploration are represented by the trekker shown climbing through the mountainous landscape. Guatemala offers some of Central America’s most rewarding hiking opportunities, from volcano ascents and cloud forests to trails around Lake Atitlán and remote Maya ruins hidden in the jungle.
