Discovery Series – Japan

The Discovery Series Japan mug marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Starbucks collectables from this beautiful country. Let me remind you that the previous collection featured no fewer than five variations of the Japan mug: the regular edition along with special releases for spring, summer, autumn, and winter, each showcasing seasonal artwork while keeping the same overall concept. It will be interesting to see whether Starbucks follows the same approach with the Discovery Series. Personally, I would love to see the beautiful sakura tree on the front of this mug transform throughout the seasons, changing from delicate pink blossoms in spring to lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn colors, and a snow-covered landscape in winter.

Please note that Starbucks has announced at least twenty Japanese mugs within the new series so far. See the picture of these mugs at the end of the post. And for now, let’s see what the design of the country mug has to offer:

– Mount Fuji dominates the front of the mug as Japan’s most recognizable natural landmark. Rising 12,388 feet above sea level, the country’s tallest mountain has inspired artists, poets, and pilgrims for centuries. Its nearly symmetrical volcanic cone has become an enduring symbol of Japan and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

– Sakura, or cherry blossoms, frame the upper portion of the design. Every spring, millions of people gather beneath blooming cherry trees for the tradition of hanami, celebrating the fleeting beauty of the blossoms. Because the flowers bloom for only a short time, they have become a powerful symbol of renewal and the appreciation of life’s most beautiful moments.

– Sushi appears above the country name, representing one of Japan’s most famous culinary traditions. Although sushi is enjoyed worldwide today, it remains deeply rooted in Japanese culture, where careful preparation, seasonal ingredients, and artistic presentation are considered just as important as the flavor itself.

– The Great Buddha, depicted on the left side of the mug, is most likely inspired by the famous bronze statue in Kamakura. Standing for more than seven centuries, it is one of Japan’s best-known Buddhist monuments and welcomes visitors from around the world seeking both history and tranquillity.

– Japanese cranes occupy the center of the design. Often associated with longevity, good fortune, and fidelity, these elegant birds appear frequently in Japanese art and folklore. Their graceful appearance has made them one of the country’s most cherished cultural symbols.

– Kabuki theater is represented by the actor dressed in elaborate costume and makeup. Dating back to the early seventeenth century, Kabuki combines dramatic storytelling, stylized performances, music, and dance into one of Japan’s most distinctive performing arts. It continues to attract audiences more than four hundred years after its creation.

– Himeji Castle rises above the Kabuki actor. Often called the “White Heron Castle” because of its brilliant white exterior, it is Japan’s finest surviving feudal castle. Originally built in the fourteenth century and expanded in the early seventeenth century, Himeji is recognized as both a National Treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

– Sumo wrestling appears beside the castle. Considered Japan’s national sport, sumo traces its origins back more than a thousand years and began as part of Shinto religious ceremonies. Today, professional tournaments held throughout the country continue to preserve many of these centuries-old traditions.

– Ramen, shown in the bowl beneath the chopsticks, rounds out the design. While its origins can be traced to Chinese noodle dishes, ramen has evolved into one of Japan’s most beloved comfort foods. From rich tonkotsu broth in the south to miso ramen in Hokkaido, every region has developed its own distinctive style, making it an essential part of any culinary journey through Japan.
