Discovery Series – Mazatlán
Discovery Series Mazatlán is just one of many mugs from Mexico that will join the collection in the upcoming months.
Mazatlán is a coastal city on Mexico’s Pacific coast, located in the state of Sinaloa and widely known for its beaches, fishing industry, historic center, and vibrant seaside atmosphere. Often called the “Pearl of the Pacific,” the city combines colonial architecture, oceanfront promenades, tropical scenery, and strong regional traditions. The Starbucks mug design captures this energetic coastal identity through a mix of marine life, beach activities, local celebrations, and recognizable cultural symbols. The result feels colorful, lively, and very much connected to Mazatlán’s oceanfront lifestyle.
Spread throughout the design are several landmarks and symbols associated with the city and its coastal culture.
– Surfing and ocean waves appear prominently in the artwork. Mazatlán is known for its Pacific beaches and surf-friendly coastline, attracting both local surfers and international visitors. Large curling waves help establish the beach atmosphere that defines much of the city.
– Traditional carnival imagery references the Mazatlán Carnival, one of the oldest and largest carnival celebrations in Mexico. Elaborate costumes, masks, music, and parades fill the city every year, creating a lively atmosphere along the waterfront and historic streets. The colorful decorative elements on the mug strongly reflect this festive tradition.
– Pulmonía taxis are illustrated near the lower section of the design. These open-air vehicles, unique to Mazatlán, have become one of the city’s most recognizable forms of transportation. Originally inspired by small golf-cart-like vehicles, pulmonías are now closely tied to the city’s tourist identity.
– The fishing industry and seafood culture are represented through boats, fish, and harbor scenes scattered throughout the mug. Mazatlán is one of Mexico’s most important fishing ports, particularly known for shrimp and tuna. Seafood remains central to the city’s cuisine and economy.
– Beachfront activities appear throughout the artwork, including swimming, relaxing by the water, and enjoying the coastline. Mazatlán’s long stretches of sand and warm Pacific climate make beach tourism one of the city’s defining characteristics.
– Isla El Crestón is represented through the island and the elevated hill visible in the background. The island is home to the famous El Faro lighthouse, one of the highest natural lighthouses in the world, perched high above the Pacific Ocean. The area is a popular hiking destination known for panoramic coastal views.
– Skyline of the city and bay views stretch across parts of the design, showing Mazatlán’s mix of waterfront buildings, marina areas, and coastal scenery. The city’s skyline curves around the bay, combining modern hotels with older sections of the historic center. The surrounding ocean and harbor remain central to Mazatlán’s identity as a Pacific coastal city.
