Discovery Series – México
Starbucks Discovery Series México is one of many mugs and ornaments being released for this country in North America with a deep cultural history shaped by Indigenous civilizations, Spanish influence, regional traditions, and vibrant modern identity. From ancient pyramids and colonial cities to colorful festivals and world-famous cuisine, the country is known for its rich visual and cultural diversity. The Starbucks mug design embraces this energy through bold colors, festive imagery, and recognizable national symbols.
An interesting detail I would like to draw your attention to is that while the bottom of the mug and the SKU sticker on the box say the mug is made in Malaysia, there is another sticker right behind the handle that says “Hecho en China” (“Made in China”). It’s a small, rather comical typo that somehow passed quality control, and I imagine it will be fixed soon.
Spread throughout the design are several iconic cultural symbols that capture the spirit and atmosphere of Mexico.
– Día de los Muertos skull stands out as one of the central elements of the design. Decorated sugar skulls, known as calaveras, are closely associated with the Day of the Dead celebrations held each year on November 1 and 2. The bright floral patterns and vivid colors reflect the festive approach to honoring loved ones.
– Marigold flowers appear throughout the mug in rich orange and yellow tones. Known in Mexico as cempasúchil, these flowers are traditionally used during Día de los Muertos celebrations. Their strong scent and bright color are believed to help guide spirits during the holiday.
– Papel picado banners stretch across the upper section of the design. These decorative cut-paper flags are commonly displayed during festivals, holidays, and public celebrations throughout Mexico. Their intricate patterns instantly create a festive atmosphere.
– Mariachi musicians are shown performing in traditional outfits with instruments in hand. Mariachi music originated in western Mexico and has become one of the countrys most recognizable musical traditions. The scene adds movement and celebration to the artwork.
– Tacos and Mexican street food are featured prominently near the bottom of the mug. Filled tortillas topped with fresh ingredients are among the most internationally recognized dishes from Mexico. The artwork also hints at the countrys broader street food culture found in markets and plazas.
– The jaguar references one of the most important animals in ancient Mesoamerican cultures. Jaguars were associated with strength, power, and spirituality by civilizations such as the Maya and Aztecs. The brightly colored interpretation on the mug gives the symbol a more playful modern look.
– Agave plants appear near the edges of the design. Native to Mexico, agave is used in the production of tequila and mezcal and has long been part of the countrys agricultural identity. Its sharp, recognizable shape fits naturally into the desert-inspired elements of the artwork.
– Lucha libre adds another unmistakable Mexican cultural element to the design. The colorful masked wrestler shown on the mug references Mexicos famous style of professional wrestling, known for its acrobatic moves, dramatic characters, and iconic masks. Lucha libre has been a major part of Mexican popular culture since the early 20th century.
– Piñata imagery contributes to the festive atmosphere of the artwork. Traditionally filled with candy and treats, piñatas are commonly used during birthdays, holidays, and celebrations across Mexico. Their bright colors and playful designs fit perfectly with the energetic style of the mug.
