Discovery Series Ornament – Kauai
This is the seventh and last (for now) Hawaiian mini mug from this new series in my collection. The Starbucks Discovery Series Ornament Kauai is a release for the oldest of Hawaii’s main islands and one of the most naturally beautiful destinations in the Pacific. Known for its lush mountains, dramatic coastline, and abundant wildlife, the island offers a slower pace and a stronger connection to nature than many of Hawaii’s more developed islands. Despite its small size, Kauaʻi is home to several unique species and traditions that have become symbols of the island. This ornament highlights a few of the natural treasures that make Kauaʻi so special.
– The Hawaiian monk seal is one of the most important wildlife symbols featured on the ornament. Found only in the Hawaiian Islands, the Hawaiian monk seal is among the most endangered marine mammals in the world. Kauaʻi is one of the best places to spot these rare animals resting on beaches or swimming in coastal waters, making them a beloved part of the island’s identity.
– Sailing and ocean recreation are represented by the sailboat shown beside the island name. Surrounded by clear Pacific waters, Kauaʻi offers excellent opportunities for sailing, snorkelling, whale watching, and exploring the island’s spectacular coastline. Many visitors experience some of the island’s most dramatic scenery from the water, particularly along the famous Nā Pali Coast.
– The island landscape of Kauaʻi appears on the reverse side of the ornament. The rugged mountains, green valleys, and volcanic ridges reflect millions of years of geological history. As the oldest of Hawaii’s major islands, Kauaʻi has been shaped by erosion into a landscape that is often considered one of the most beautiful in the Hawaiian archipelago.
– Feral chickens are among Kauaʻi’s most recognizable and unexpected residents. Descended from a mix of escaped domestic chickens and wild junglefowl, they can be found almost everywhere on the island, from beaches and parks to parking lots and residential neighbourhoods. Their population grew significantly after hurricanes damaged farms and released additional birds into the wild.
Together, these symbols capture the essence of Kauaʻi: a place where rare wildlife, dramatic landscapes, and a deep connection to the ocean create one of Hawaii’s most unforgettable island experiences.
