Discovery Series – Phuket
The Starbucks Discovery Series Phuket mug explores Thailand’s largest island, known for its beaches, maritime culture, historic old town, and distinctive Peranakan heritage. Phuket grew into an important trading and tin-mining center, attracting Chinese, Indian, European, and Muslim communities whose influence can still be seen in the island’s architecture and food. Today, Phuket combines a busy international tourism industry with traditions that developed over centuries around fishing, trade, and life by the Andaman Sea.
– Air travel is an important part of modern Phuket, with the island serving as one of Thailand’s busiest international destinations. Phuket International Airport connects the island with cities throughout Asia, Europe, and beyond, making flying one of the most common ways visitors arrive.
– Surfing has become increasingly popular along Phuket’s west coast, especially during the monsoon season when larger waves reach beaches such as Kata and Kalim. The island’s warm water and accessible beaches make it a popular place for both beginners and experienced surfers.
– Traditional long-tail boats remain a familiar sight around Phuket’s coast. Their narrow wooden hulls and exposed engines are well suited to short trips between beaches, bays, and nearby islands, and they are still widely used for fishing and tourism.
– Phuket Old Town is known for its colorful Sino-European and Sino-Portuguese shophouses, many of which date from the period when tin mining brought considerable wealth to the island. Streets such as Thalang Road and Soi Romanee are lined with restored historic buildings that now contain cafés, shops, museums, and guesthouses.
– The traditional clothing shown on the mug is connected with Baba-Nyonya, or Peranakan, culture. Phuket’s Chinese-descended communities developed a distinctive local identity reflected in clothing, cuisine, architecture, and family traditions. The elegant kebaya worn by women is one of the most recognizable elements of this heritage and remains visible during ceremonies and cultural festivals.
– Waterfalls add another side to Phuket beyond its famous beaches. Forested areas in the island’s interior contain several waterfalls, including Bang Pae and Ton Sai, which are especially impressive during the rainy season.
– Seafood plays a major role in Phuket’s cuisine. Fresh fish, prawns, squid, shellfish, and crab are widely available in markets and restaurants, reflecting the island’s long dependence on the surrounding Andaman Sea.
– Sailing is especially popular around Phuket because of the island’s sheltered bays, warm waters, and easy access to nearby islands. Marinas around Phuket serve yachts and sailing boats exploring Phang Nga Bay, the Andaman coast, and island groups farther offshore.
– Snorkelling and diving are among Phuket’s best-known marine activities. Coral reefs and tropical fish can be found around nearby islands and coastal sites, while Phuket also serves as a major departure point for diving trips farther into the Andaman Sea.
– Wat Chalong is the largest and one of the most important Buddhist temples in Phuket. Officially known as Wat Chaiyathararam, the temple complex is especially associated with the revered monks Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, who played an important role in local history during the 19th century. Its richly decorated halls, golden details, and tall chedi make it one of the island’s best-known cultural landmarks.
– The Big Buddha is surprisingly missing from the design, considering how strongly it has become associated with Phuket. The enormous white statue sits on Nakkerd Hill and can be seen from many parts of the island, making it one of Phuket’s most recognizable modern landmarks. Given its scale and visibility, I would have expected the designers to include it among the city’s major symbols.
