Discovery Series – Playa del Carmen
The Starbucks Discovery Series Playa del Carmen celebrates one of Mexico’s most popular coastal destinations on the Riviera Maya. Originally a small fishing village, Playa del Carmen experienced rapid growth during the late twentieth century as tourism expanded along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Today, it serves as both a resort city and a gateway to the region’s beaches, reefs, cenotes, and archaeological sites. – Coral reefs and tropical fish are represented by the underwater scene on the left side of the mug. The nearby Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System is the second-largest coral reef system in the world and supports a remarkable diversity of marine life. Snorkelling and diving excursions allow visitors to explore colourful coral formations, tropical fish, sea turtles, and other species found in these protected waters.
– Cenotes appear as freshwater swimming holes surrounded by tropical vegetation. These natural sinkholes were formed when limestone bedrock collapsed, exposing underground rivers and crystal-clear pools. The Yucatán Peninsula contains thousands of cenotes, many of which were considered sacred by the ancient Maya and remain among the region’s most distinctive natural attractions.

Many visitors use the city as a starting point for exploring nearby islands and coastal attractions.
– Tropical cocktails symbolize the city’s resort culture and beachside lifestyle. Oceanfront bars and restaurants serve a wide variety of refreshing drinks that can be enjoyed while overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The cocktail glasses on the mug capture the laid-back vacation atmosphere for which Playa del Carmen is known.
– The scarlet macaw perched above the city name represents the rich wildlife of southern Mexico. Although these colourful parrots are more commonly associated with tropical forests farther south, they remain one of the most recognizable birds of the region. Their brilliant plumage makes them a fitting symbol for the vibrant colours found throughout the mug.
– The beach buggy on the right side of the design reflects the spirit of exploration that attracts so many travellers to Playa del Carmen.
