Discovery Series – Singapore
Starbucks Discovery Series – Singapore now joins the ornament from the Lion City that we reviewed earlier together. Three details are particularly worth noting. First, the writing on the box cover appears in only one variation – English. Second, the mugs are manufactured in China. Finally, and perhaps most distinctively, this is the first mug in the Discovery Series to feature an SKU sticker attached to the bottom, similar to those found on Been There and You Are Here collections. In a way, this small detail once served as a sign that the mug was brand new and not used.
Singapore is a modern island city-state known for its striking skyline, tropical greenery, multicultural neighborhoods, and reputation as one of the cleanest and most efficient cities in the world. Despite its compact size, Singapore blends futuristic architecture with nature reserves, historic districts, and diverse food culture. The Starbucks mug design captures this balance particularly well, combining recognizable landmarks with wildlife, gardens, and scenes from everyday life. The result feels colorful, energetic, and very distinctly Singaporean.
Featured throughout the design are several landmarks and symbols that reflect the city-state’s identity, scenery, and culture.
– Marina Bay and the skyline of Singapore can be seen on the front of the mug. Modern skyscrapers rise above the waterfront, creating one of the most recognizable city skylines in Asia. The marina area, filled with promenades, gardens, and illuminated towers, highlights Singapore’s reputation as a highly modern global city.
– The Singapore Flyer rises above the waterfront. Standing at 541 feet (165 meters), it is one of the world’s tallest observation wheels. The structure offers panoramic views of the city skyline and the Marina Bay area.
– Supertree Grove from Gardens by the Bay is illustrated with its towering tree-like structures. These vertical gardens, covered with plants and illuminated at night, have become one of Singapore’s most photographed attractions. Their futuristic appearance perfectly matches the city’s modern identity.
– The Merlion is partially visible near the edge of the design. With the head of a lion and the body of a fish, the statue symbolizes Singapore’s origins as a fishing village and its nickname, the “Lion City.” It remains one of the country’s most iconic national symbols.
– Orangutans appear climbing across the design, referencing Singapore’s strong connection to wildlife conservation and zoological parks. The Singapore Zoo and Night Safari are internationally known for their open-concept habitats and tropical environments.
– Shophouses add a historic architectural element to the mug. These colorful colonial-era buildings are commonly found in neighborhoods such as Chinatown and Katong. Their preserved facades contrast nicely with Singapore’s modern skyscrapers.
– Singapore’s greenery and nature parks are woven throughout the artwork. Trees, tropical plants, flowers, and landscaped gardens emphasize the city’s reputation as a “City in a Garden.” Even heavily urbanized areas are filled with green spaces and walking paths.
– Cycling and outdoor lifestyle are represented through the cyclist featured on the mug. Singapore has expanded its network of park connectors and waterfront trails in recent years, making cycling and outdoor recreation increasingly popular activities across the island.
– Singapore Changi Airport control tower appears in the background as a subtle nod to one of the world’s most celebrated airports. Changi has repeatedly been ranked among the best airports globally, known for its architecture, indoor gardens, and large-scale attractions.
