Discovery Series – Victoria
Let’s move to Vancouver Island for a minute and review the Discovery Series Victoria mug.
Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, is known for its coastal scenery, historic architecture, gardens, and strong connection to the Pacific Ocean. Located on Vancouver Island, the city combines British colonial influences with West Coast culture, marine life, and outdoor recreation. The Starbucks mug design captures this relaxed coastal atmosphere through a mix of waterfront landmarks, wildlife, transportation, flowers, and local traditions. The artwork feels colourful and distinctly tied to life on Canada’s Pacific coast.
Appearing throughout the design are several landmarks and symbols associated with Victoria and Vancouver Island.
– Whale watching is represented through the large whale imagery on the back of the mug. Victoria is one of the best-known whale watching destinations in British Columbia, with orcas, humpback whales, and gray whales commonly spotted in the surrounding waters of the Salish Sea.
– Victoria’s Chinatown Gate appears at the back of the mug as well. Victoria is home to Canada’s oldest Chinatown, established during the gold rush era of the 19th century. The decorative gate symbolizes the city’s long Chinese-Canadian history and cultural heritage.
– The Parliament Buildings and historic downtown architecture are reflected in the ornate buildings shown across the artwork. Victoria’s waterfront downtown is known for its preserved heritage structures, including the British Columbia Parliament Buildings and the Fairmont Empress Hotel.
– Harbour ferries and coastal transportation are represented through the ferries and boats. Victoria’s Inner Harbour is constantly active with passenger ferries, floatplanes, sailboats, and tour vessels connecting the city with Vancouver, Seattle, and nearby coastal communities.
– Street musicians and local arts culture appear near the center of the design through the dancing and trumpet-playing figures. Victoria has a lively arts scene, especially during the warmer months when performers, festivals, and live music fill the harbour area and public spaces.
– Tea culture is represented through the decorative teacups and teapot imagery. Afternoon tea has become one of Victoria’s best-known traditions, heavily influenced by the city’s British heritage and famously associated with the Empress Hotel.
– Flowers and gardens are scattered throughout the design of the mug. Victoria is often called the “Garden City” because of its mild climate and abundance of flowers, public gardens, and landscaped parks that remain colourful for much of the year.
– The harbour skyline and sailboats appear along the waterfront scenes shown near the center and right side of the mug. Victoria’s Inner Harbour is one of the city’s defining features, combining marina life, historic buildings, and ocean views in the heart of downtown.
– Cycling and outdoor recreation are illustrated through the cyclists near the right side of the design. Victoria is known for its bike-friendly atmosphere and scenic cycling routes, including the Galloping Goose Trail and waterfront pathways throughout the region.
– Sea otters and coastal wildlife are the nod to an important part of the region’s identity, with seals, otters, seabirds, and whales commonly associated with the coastal waters surrounding Vancouver Island.
