You Are Here – Fredrikstad
This is both exciting and exhausting news for collectors hoping to complete their You Are Here collection, as Starbucks has recently released two new mugs from Norway. The first is the You Are Here Fredrikstad mug, featured here. Stay tuned for a review of the second release.
Fredrikstad is one of Norway’s most charming coastal cities, located at the mouth of the Glomma River where it meets the Skagerrak. Founded in 1567 by King Frederick II after the nearby town of Sarpsborg was destroyed during war, Fredrikstad is best known for its remarkably preserved fortified old town, waterfront scenery, and easy access to the islands of the Oslofjord. The Starbucks mug design highlights the city’s maritime heritage, colourful architecture, and coastal landscapes through a collection of symbols closely associated with the region.
Featured throughout the design are several landmarks and symbols connected to Fredrikstad and its surroundings.
– Gamlebyen (Old Town) is represented through the geometric star-shaped fortifications visible on the mug. Built in the late 16th century, Gamlebyen is one of Northern Europe’s best-preserved fortified towns. Its defensive walls, moats, and historic streets remain a major attraction and offer a glimpse into Norway’s military and urban history.
– The colourful waterfront houses of Fredrikstad appear on the right side of the design. The city is known for its pleasant riverside districts, historic buildings, and pedestrian-friendly streets that create a welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
– The archipelago of the Oslofjord is reflected through the small islands scattered across the artwork. Hundreds of islands, skerries, and rocky outcrops surround the region, making boating, island hopping, and coastal exploration popular activities during the summer months.
– Sailing and boating are represented through the sailboats and motorboats shown along the waterfront scenes. Life on the water is an important part of local culture, and the fjord around Fredrikstad fills with recreational boats during the warmer seasons.
– Cycling appears through the bicycle imagery near the city center. Fredrikstad is known for its extensive cycling paths and relatively flat terrain, making bicycles a popular way to explore both the city and the surrounding coastline.
– Seagulls soar above the landscape throughout the design. These birds are a familiar sight along Norway’s coast and are closely associated with harbor towns and maritime life.
– The lobster shown on the left side of the mug highlights the region’s connection to the sea. Lobster fishing has long been part of the coastal traditions of southeastern Norway, and the waters around the Oslofjord are known for their rich marine life.
– The beach umbrella, starfish, and shoreline scenes represent beaches and coastal recreation. During the summer, the islands and coastline around Fredrikstad become popular destinations for swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, and enjoying the outdoors.
– The Glomma River, Norway’s longest river, is subtly reflected through the waterways running throughout the artwork. The river has shaped Fredrikstad’s development for centuries, serving as an important transportation route and helping establish the city as a significant trading and shipping center.
