The Starbucks You Are Here Olomouc mug introduces one of the Czech Republic’s most historic cities, with roots stretching back to the Great Moravian period. I would like to thank the blog reader for providing the photos of this mug.

Olomouc became an important political and religious center during the Middle Ages, and in 1063 it became the seat of a bishopric. The city prospered as a major center of Moravia, although its history also includes the Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years’ War, when Swedish troops held Olomouc from 1642 to 1650. Today, its historic center is known for its churches, fountains, palaces and monuments, many of which are represented on the mug.

– The front of the mug showcases the Hradisko Monastery, one of Olomouc’s most important historical landmarks. The monastery was founded in the 11th century by Benedictine monks and later became a Premonstratensian monastery. The magnificent Baroque complex seen today was largely rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries and is sometimes referred to as the “Moravian Escorial” because of its impressive architecture.

– Above the cityscape, we can also see figures dressed in traditional Moravian costumes. Folk costumes in Moravia vary considerably from one region to another, with distinctive embroidery, colours and accessories. They remain an important part of local traditions and are still worn during festivals, folk celebrations and other cultural events.

– The Olomouc Astronomical Clock is another distinctive landmark depicted on the mug. Located on the wall of the town hall, the clock dates back to the 15th century, although it has been modified several times. Its current appearance reflects a major reconstruction carried out in the 1950s, when the decoration was redesigned in the style of Socialist Realism.

– The Saint Wenceslas Cathedral is one of the most recognizable buildings in Olomouc. Originally founded in the 12th century, the cathedral underwent several transformations before receiving its present Gothic Revival appearance in the 19th century. Its main tower reaches 328 feet, making it one of the tallest church towers in the Czech Republic.

– The Holy Trinity Column stands in the heart of Olomouc’s Upper Square and is one of the city’s most remarkable Baroque monuments. Built between 1716 and 1754, the column is richly decorated with religious sculptures and is topped by a gilded representation of the Holy Trinity. Its importance was recognized in 2000 when it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

– Although it is located outside Olomouc, the Bouzov Castle is another famous Moravian landmark featured on the mug. The picturesque castle dates back to the early 14th century and was extensively rebuilt in a romantic Gothic style around the turn of the 20th century. With its towers, battlements and fairytale appearance, Bouzov has also become a popular filming location for movies and television productions.

– The mug also includes animals from the Olomouc Zoo, which is situated on Svatý Kopeček, just outside the city. The zoo opened in 1956 and occupies a large wooded area on the slopes of the hill. Its collection includes hundreds of animal species, making it one of the most popular attractions in the Olomouc area.
